This study was conducted to submit a basic material to help the efficient nursing intervention which reducing depression and improving life satisfaction of the elderly in community.
The period of data collection was from August, 4, 1997 to August, 23, 1997 and a total 162 woman aged over 65 were studied who were registered in "house for the aged" in 4 low-income areas located at Taegu. Korea.
Analysis of the data was done by use of percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient For the post hoc of the ANOVA, Scheffe test is used.
The results of study are summarized as follows;
1. According to whether they have mate or not(P = .019), perceived level of family relationship(P = .000), perceived level of health(P = .000) and perceived economic status(P .000), the level of depression showed difference statistically. But, each age group of the elderly, whether they have religion or not, educational background, family living together concreteness, pocket money and whether they participating in social activities or not, the level of depression did not show any difference statistically.
2. According to each age group of the elderly(P = .021), whether they have religion or not(P = .013), perceived level of family relationship(P = .000), perceived level of health(P = .000) and perceived economic status(P = .000), the level of life satisfaction showed difference statistically.
But, educational background, whether they have mate or not, family living together concretness, pocket money and whether they participating in social activities or not, the level of life satisfaction did not show any difference statistically.
3. The significant negative correlation between depression and life satisfaction of the elderly observed(r = -.669, P = .000).
Therefore, for the successful aging of the elderly in the community, we should develop and provide nursing care which control the variables affecting to depression and life satisfaction of the elderly.
