투고논문 : 제국과 식민지 간 재현 경쟁의 장, 스포츠: 조선신궁체육대회와 메이지신궁체육대회를 중심으로 = Sport, the Field of “Representation Competition” Between the Empire and the Colonized: Focused on the Chosen shrine athletic meeting and Meiji shrine athletic meeting

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 조선신궁체육대회 및 메이지신궁체육대회라는 식민지기 중요 스포츠 이벤트를 재해석하는 것이다. 이들 이벤트를 제국의 프로파간다 무대 혹은 피식민자들의 민족주의의 표출 통로가 아닌 두 세력 사이에 재현의 경쟁이 펼쳐지는 장으로 가정하고, 스포츠이벤트를 통한 재현 경쟁에의 참여 의도, 경쟁 양상, 결과 등을 분석하고자 한다. 식민지 조선에서 근대 스포츠는 이를 전유한 엘리트 민족주의자들에 의해 신체의 근대화=서구화의 도구, 제국 및 식민권력과의 헤게모니 경쟁 수단이었다. 이를 위해 조선이라는 독자적인 ‘상상의 공동체’를 ‘세계적’ 무대에서 재현하고자 했다. 메이지신궁체육대회와 조선신궁체육대회는 제국과 식민권력에 의해 만들어진 이벤트로, 전자는 천황제 이데올로기에 기초한 국민통합을 위해 만들어졌다. 후자는 식민권력의 통치 과제에 따라 이벤트에 부여된 의미, 그리고 의미화에 기초하여 재현된 ‘조선’이 달라지는 양상을 보인다. 1920년대 ‘내선융화’가 식민권력의 중요과제였던 시기 ‘조선’은 ‘일본인’과 ‘조선인’이공존하는 공간, 그러면서도 재조일본인이 주도하는 공간으로 재현되었다. 1920년대 엘리트 민족주의자들은 조선신궁체육대회 및 메이지신궁체육대회에 관여하지 않는 전략을 취했다. 하지만 1930년대부터 일본인 선수와 경쟁하여 승리하고 세계무대에 진출하는 선수들이 등장하자, 이 대회를 바라보는 시각은 크게 바뀌었다. 그런데, 1930년대 중반 이후 제국과 식민권력은 이 이벤트들을 ‘일본’의 전쟁 수행을 위해 통합되고 단련된 ‘국민’의 ‘정신’과 ‘신체’를 재현하는 무대로 바꾸어 갔다. 따라서 피식민 엘리트들의 기대처럼 ‘조선’이 재현될 여지는 마련되지 못했고, 이들의 재현 전략은 실패로 돌아갔다. 그러나, 여전히 스포츠를 양 민족간 경쟁과 대결의 장으로 여기는 피식민지인들의 존재는 통합되고 단련된 제국의 정신과 신체를 재현하려는 시도 또한 실패였음을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the two major sport events during the colonial period in Korea: the Chosen shrine athletic meeting and Meiji shrine athletic meeting. This study assumes that the sport events were fields of “representation competition” between the Empire and the colonized. On the basis of the assumption, this study analyzes the goal of participation in the competition, the aspects, and the effects of the competition. Since its introduction, modern sport has been tightly intertwined with nationalism in Korea. T he sign ifican ce of modern sport f or e lite n ation alists i n colon ial Korea was composed of three basic elements: modernization (=westernization) of the Korean body, “hegemony competition,” and the representation of an “imagined community.” The Chosen shrine athletic meeting was created by the colonial rulers in Korea and was utilized for their campaign to the colonized people. Following the colonial government``s basic doctrine in the 1920s, at the opening ceremonies, Chosen was represented as a land of peaceful coexistence between Japanese and Koreans. But in the late 1930s, instead of the term “Chosen,” the term ”Japanese nation” was emphasized. The colon ized e lites d id n ot t ake part i n t he colon izer``s sport even ts i n the 1920s. However, after 1930, Korean players were encouraged to participate in the sport events so as to win against the “Japanese players” and to advance to the “international stage.” In the late 1930s, “Chosen” could hardly be represented, as the Empire tightened its control over representation by the colonized. At the same time, unlike the Empire``s intention, the sport events could not represent “a well-integrated empire” because the colonized were continuing to view the events as a space for confrontation.
