한국수어사전 편찬 방향을 위한 제언 = A Proposal on Developmental Direction for Korean Sign Language Dictionary

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to propose a future direction of the development of Korean Sign Language Dictionary. This proposal, when followed, will help the dictionary capture features of Korean Sign Language as a natural language more adequately. The proposal deals with two major aspects of sign language dictionaries: vocabulary items and lexical information. First, we propose that an appropriate change take place in the ways in which sign language vocabularies are collected, selected and represented. This change involves moving from Korean-centeredness to Korean Sign Language-centeredness in the approach to dictionary making at large. This change also involves a proper recognition of the gloss of each vocabulary entry as a mere reference to the entry. Secondly, we propose that lexical information properly include semantic, syntactic and pragmatic information.
These lexical information can be effectively provided not only by definition statements but also well thought-out example sentences. Syntactic information, in particular, must address the grammatical features unique to a sign language. These unique features include category information, locational and directional information and non-manual features. In order for us to engage in an adequate collection of these unique features, a corpus-based data collection is a must. If and when these proposals are implemented thoroughly and faithfully, the future sign language dictionary is believed to contribute to solidifying the identity of Korean Sign Language as a natural language independent from Korean.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고의 목적은 자연언어로서의 한국수어의 언어적 특성을 담은 한국수어사전의 편찬 방향을 제안하는 것이다. 진정한 의미에서의 한국수어사전이 되기 위해 표제어와 사전적 정보라는 두 가지 논점을 다룬다. 먼저, 한국수어사전에서 표제어의 문제이다. 표제어의 수집 및 선정이 한국어 중심에서 한국수어 중심으로 전환되어야 함을 제안한다. 또한 표제어의 표기문제에 있어서는 한국수어를 위한 대중적인 표기체계가 없는 실정에서 활용된 한국어 주석은한국수어 어휘에 해당하는 참조의 역할을 할 뿐 한국수어 어휘의 표제어가 아님을 인식하고한국수어에 대응하는 보다 적절한 한국어 주석을 찾아내는 노력이 필요하다. 둘째, 사전적 정보에는 의미적, 화용적, 문법적 정보가 포함되어야 함을 제안한다. 이러한 사전적 정보는 뜻풀이와 용례를 통해 폭넓은 사전 이용자들에게 효과적으로 제공될 수 있다. 나아가 수어 고유의 문법정보가 충실히 다루어질 것을 제안한다. 수어의 문법정보에는 음성-청각적 언어인한국어와 다른 시각-수지적 언어의 특징인 3차원적 공간을 사용하는 방식, 동사에 따른 위치와 방향 정보, 품사, 비수지 자질 등이 해당된다. 이러한 특징들이 한국수어사전 안에서 적절히 그리고 충실히 기술되기 위해 한국수어 말뭉치 자료에 기초한 사전 편찬 작업이 실행되어야 한다. 한국수어사전이 진정한 수어사전의 모습을 갖추게 될 때 한국수어의 자연언어로서의 정당성과 한국어로부터 독립된 언어 정체성을 한국 사회 전반이 인식할 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다.
