This study conducts a comparative analysis of the historical formation and functional changes of the demilitarized zones (DMZs) established in Vietnam and the Korean Peninsula from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s during the Cold War era. It deeply compares the impact of these DMZs on international politics and regional security, aiming to enhance understanding of how they have served as means to explore the possibilities of peaceful unification in both regions. The formation of DMZs in these areas was influenced and supported by the interference of superpowers, reflecting the ideological confrontations of the Cold War period. In Korea, the 1953 Armistice Agreement at Panmunjom decisively led to the creation of the DMZ between North and South Korea, while in Vietnam, the 1954 Geneva Agreement established the DMZ between North and South Vietnam. During this period, both the Korean Peninsula and Vietnam were significant in the strategies of expansion of influence by the United States and the Soviet Union, and their rivalry greatly affected the internal conflicts in both regions. This study also examines incidents such as military conflicts, psychological warfare, and espionage activities within the DMZs of Korea and Vietnam, which amplified political tensions and created complex obstacles in the process of peacebuilding. Furthermore, the research analyzes why the DMZs in Vietnam and the Korean Peninsula have come to symbolize different things: in Vietnam, the DMZ turned into a symbol of peace and national integration following the end of the war, while the Korean DMZ remains a symbol of division and ongoing tension. This difference stems from the distinct historical processes each region has undergone and the differences in political situations that continue to the present. In Vietnam, the conclusion of the war and national integration rendered the DMZ a relic of the past, whereas in Korea, the continued state of division keeps the DMZ as a symbol of ongoing division, tension, and conflict. These circumstances provide important implications for exploring solutions for peaceful unification. The conclusion of this study focuses on tracing the historical formation and functional changes of the DMZs, examining their impact on the peaceful unification process in each region, and highlighting what this implies for the current peace process on the Korean Peninsula.
