This study aims to construct a comprehensive theoretical framework surrounding the concept of neoliberalism, seeking to address the confusion and debates surrounding its understanding. Neoliberalism can be analyzed through three primary lenses: as a cause, a process, and an effect.
Firstly, the neoliberalism as a cause primarily aligns with studies following Polanyian perspective, interpreting neoliberalism as an idea. Secondly, the neoliberalism as a process is adopted by studies subscribing to Marxian perspective, conceptualizing neoliberalism as a facet of class struggle and a phase within capital accumulation. Lastly, the neoliberalism as an effect is embraced by studies engaging with Foucauldian perspective, perceiving neoliberalism as a norm or a mode of subjectivation.
These perspectives converge in their shared objective to elaborate upon the concept of neoliberalism, challenging the oversimplified view of ‘state versus market.’ Furthermore, by categorizing neoliberalism into these three distinct concepts, this approach enriches the discourse and encourages a more profound exploration into the essence of contemporary neoliberalism and the forces shaping its development.
