The effect of dumbbell exercise on body composition and muscle strength in 82 highschool students aged 17-18 year. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of the following two groups: Dumbbell exercise(DEx) and control(Con). The subjects performed dumbbell exercise with pairs of 1∼2 ㎏ dumbbell 20 min, 5 day/week after dinner for 15 weeks. The exercise routine included 15 repetition standing shoulder press, bent dumbbell row, squat, upper body twist, butterfly, bent lateral raise, simultaneous curl, concentration curl, one hand draw, kickback, front raise, and arm extension in a day. Body weight, body composition, muscle endurance, and muscle strength were measured before and after 7, 15 weeks of dumbbell exercise. Body weight was not affected in 15 weeks of dumbbell exercise without reducing fat free mass(FFM). The increase in grasping power, muscle endurance(abdominal muscle, crowbar hang up) were significantly higher in the DEx group than in the Con group. These results suggest that a daily dumbbell exercise decreases body fat without reducing FFM and increases muscle strength of highschool students.
