William Perkins의 설교론

국문 초록 (Abstract)

청교도주의의 아버지, William Perkins의 설교학은 한국교회의 설교의 갱신을 위한 소중한 통찰력을 제공해준다. Perkins가 저술한 『설교의 기술』(The Art of Prophesying)은 후대 잉글랜드와 신대륙의 청교도들의 기본 교과서가 되어 약 200여 년간 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 이 책의 가장 큰 특징 가운데 하나는 Perkins가 Hyperius를 따라 고전적 수사학과 결별하고 수사학과 논리학을 설교의 시녀로 삼은 것이다. Perkins는 무엇보다도 당대의 영국 국교회의 ‘형이상학적 설교’에 대항하여 ‘평이한 설교’로 청중들이 이해하기 쉽도록 복음을 전하였다. Perkins는 Ramus의 이분법으로 설교론 전체를 구성하였다. Perkins에 의하면, 설교란 설교의 준비로서 성경 연구와 실제적 전달로 구성된다. 성경 해석에 있어서 중세의 네 가지 해석법(문자적, 풍유적, 비유적, 그리고 신비적)을 거부하고, 오로지 문자적 해석을 강조하며, 성경의 올바른 뜻을 깨닫기 위해 기도를 강조한다. 기도는 성령에 의한 본문의 올바른 해석을 보장해주기 때문이다. 본문 해석이 이루어진 다음에 설교자는 성도들의 삶에 유익한 교리를 추출하고, 청중의 믿음의 건덕을 위해 반드시 이 교리를 적용해야 한다. 따라서 Perkins는 설교 구조에 있어서 본문의 ‘해석-교리-적용’의 삼중구조를 제안한다. 설교의 전달에 있어서 인간의 지혜는 감추고 성령의 능력이 나타나야 한다고 가르침으로써 사도 바울의 설교관(고전2:1-5)을 강조한다. 결론적으로 Perkins 설교론은 성령론적 관점에서에서의 개혁주의 설교학의 기초를 제공하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Homiletics of William Perkins, known as the father of Puritanism, will give us precious insights to a renewal of preaching for Korean Churches. Perkins’ The Arte of Prophecying has influenced puritans in both England and New England for around 200 years. One of the most characteristics of this book is that Perkins, following Hyperius, departs with classical rhetoric and makes rhetoric and logic a maid to serve preaching. He above all introduces ‘plain style’ of preaching against ‘metaphysical preaching’ of Anglican preachers in order to the hearers’ better understanding the Gospel. Perkins composes his book on preaching according to the dichotomy of Ramus as a principle. According to Perkins, preaching consists of both a Bible study as a preparation for preaching and practical delivery of Preaching. As for interpretation of the Scriptures he rejects four methods of the Middle ages(literal, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical), he emphasizes the literal sense of the Scriptures only, and furthermore underlines prayer for a right understanding the Bible. For prayer guarantees a right interpretation of a text for preaching by the help of the Spirit. After the interpretation of a text, preacher should collect useful doctrines from the text, and apply the doctrines to congregations for their edifying in faith. Therefore Perkins suggests a threefold structure for preaching, that is, ‘expounding – doctrines – application’. In delivering a sermon, a human wisdom should be hidden whereas the power of the Spirit must be demonstrated. Perkins follows Apostle Paul’s teaching on preaching(1 Corinthians 2:1-5). In conclusion, Perkins’ homiletics gives a basis for Reformed homiletics in a pneumatological perspective.
