<무성격자>의 ‘인색’ 고찰

This paper hopes to grasp the sentiment of ‘stinginess’ based on the ‘semiotics of passions’ step by step. As opposed to the residual sequence of Yong-pal, who is working as an experiment to test his father-in-law Man-su, Man-su’s sequence of ‘stinginess’ is extreme in that he even showed ecstasy for wealth to the last moment of his life.
Through the two sequences, Jeong-il steps away from his prejudice against Man-su. He becomes genuinely impressed by Man-su’s intensity for keeping and accumulating wealth. Thus, instead of being embarrassed and despising Man su’s stinginess, Jeong-il acknowledges its value. Through the desire for wealth overcoming death, Jeong-il recognizes the power of wealth and shows possibilities for changes in his attitude and actions towards life itself.
In addition, through his character’s awakening, the author Choi Myeong-ik himself could personally value the life of his won father, who was a commercial capitalist in Pyeongyang and could socially take a chance to face the contemporary situation of colonial capitalism without a bias.
