Volume 4 of 『Maegyejip(梅溪集)』 contains a total of 10 gimuns(記文) written by Maegye(梅溪) Jowi(曺偉)(1454-1503). Since they are all gimuns(記文) of buildings, they are classified as Nujeonggi(樓亭記). If we look at Maegye(梅溪)'s written records in general, we can see that Maegye(梅溪) was also skilled in written records. Additionally, the content structure generally shows a tendency to mix records, landscape descriptions, and arguments.
Let’s look at the contents and characteristics of Maegye(梅溪)’s records. First, we can see the ‘objective records and emphasis on Neo-Confucian ideology.’ Maegye(梅溪)'s 'Dokseodanggi(讀書堂記)' and 'Haeinsajungchanggi(海印寺重創記)' show an objective writing and discussion-oriented narrative style that emphasizes Neo-Confucian ideology. What is noteworthy is that, unlike other records of Maegye(梅溪), honorification, baebigu(排比句), and a certain number of characters were effectively utilized.
We can see ‘a commendation for the selection of Mokmingwan(牧民官) and an affirmation of the ceremonial value of the building’s architecture.’ The gimuns(記文) of public buildings in Maegye(梅溪) have a narrative structure that first commends the selection of Mokmingwan(牧民官) and then positively evaluates the ceremonial value of the building. Maegye(梅溪)'s spirit of love for the people and Neo-Confucian view of the people can be confirmed.
You can see ‘a description of the scenery and an explanation of the meaning of the name of the pavilion.’ The gimuns(記文) related to the pavilion in Maegye(梅溪) not only describe the scenery but also contain Neo-Confucian discussions. In particular, the weight of discussion is high as Maegye(梅溪) gives a name to the pavilion and explains the meaning of the name. In addition, the pavilion-related gimuns(記文) written by Maegye(梅溪) are of high literary value as they reflect Maegye(梅溪)'s personality well.
