사랑이 홍콩을 구할 수 있을까?: 배타적 정체성과 본질주의를 넘어서 = Can Love Save Hong Kong?: Beyond Exclusive Identities and Essentialism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2019년 홍콩 송환법 반대시위와 그 이후의 정치적 변화 속에서 홍콩 정체성에 초점을 맞추어, 기존 연구에서 다뤄지지 않은‘사랑’의 틀로 새로운 관점을 제시한다. 홍콩과 중국 간 관계에 대한 기존의 두 가지 주요 내러티브인 중앙정부의 담론과 홍콩 우익 본토파의 담론은 극단적으로 대립하는 듯 보이지만 본질주의적 정체성 개념을 공유한다는 점에서 거울상 관계에 있다. 이에 반해 본 연구는, 홍콩인들이 이러한 본질주의적 내러티브를 넘어서는 정체성을 어떻게 실천적으로 형성해왔는지에 주목한다.
송환법 반대시위와 국가안전법 도입을 겪으며 홍콩에서 생겨나는 많은 변화에 대해 국내외에서 연구가 나오고 있지만, 시위 과정에서 가장 많이 등장한 표현 중 하나 인‘사랑’에 주목한 연구는 아직 없다. 본 논문은 정부가 요구하고 허용하는 유일한 사랑인‘나라 사랑’에 대해 고찰한 후, 홍콩인들이 일상 속에서 새로운 연결을 통해 배타적이지 않은 사랑을 실천하고 있음을 보여줌으로써 정체성과 민족주의 연구에 기여 한다.

This study examines Hong Kong identity in the context of the 2019 anti-extradition bill protests and subsequent political changes through the lens of “love,” a concept largely overlooked in existing research. The two dominant narratives concerning the relationship between Hong Kong and China — Beijing’s discourse and the rhetoric of Hong Kong’s right-wing localists — appear starkly opposed. Sharing an essentialist conceptualization of identity, however, they are mirror images of each other. This study examines Hongkongers’ active construction of an identity transcending such essentialist narratives. On the one hand, the government has imposed a notion of unconditional love as patriotism. On the other, Hongkongers have redefined and practiced love in a non-exclusive manner through everyday connections and solidarity. In highlighting how love functions as a critical force in reshaping narratives of belonging in contemporary Hong Kong, this study contributes to broader discussions on identity and nationalism.
