한국의 미얀마 연구 동향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국의 미얀마 연구는 최근까지 동남아 연구 중에서도 그 역사가 일천하고, 사회적 관심의 부족과 척박한 연구 환경으로 인해 전문 연구자 규모, 가용 자원, 연구 실적 측면에서 매우 낙후되어 있었다. 그러나 2011년 미얀마 신정부 출범 이후 미얀마에 대한 한국 사회의 관심이 급증하고 연구 환경이 크게 개선되면서 미얀마 연구는 커다란 전환기를 맞고 있다. 기존의 미얀마 연구를 분석해보면 전체적으로 다른 동남아 지역연구에 비해 연구실적 규모가 작고 주전공자가 극히 소수이며, 분야로는 정치·국제관계 분야에 치우친 것으로 나타난다. 향후 미얀마 연구는 양적 성장과 함께 질적 향상이 동시에 요구되며 연구 분야에서는 정치·국제관계 이외의 분야로 연구가 확대되는 것이 필요하다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In Korea, Myanmar studies has traditionally been one of the most underdeveloped fields of Southeast Asian studies, due to its short history, limited demands for research and training, and inadequate research environment. However, interest toward Myanmar has grown significantly over the recent years, together with the rapid political and economic reforms in Myanmar. This article analyzes the research trends in Myanmar studies in Korea, and identifies its challenges and opportunities. Based on the analysis of trends in graduate education, journal articles, book publications, and research grants, the following observations can be made. First, the overall size of research output (measured by the total number of publications) has dramatically increased over the recent years, yet it still remains very small in comparison to other fields, such as Indonesian or Vietnamese studies. Second, political science has been the dominant subfield within Myanmar studies in Korea, although sociology and anthropology have begun to catch up over the past few years. Finally, it has been also found that, because only a small number of researchers have been carrying the load, their works have been overrepresented in the field. Greater institutional attention and support is needed to meet the rapidly increasing demands for Myanmar-related research and training and to do so without compromising research quality.
