  MY DEAR SIR:--THE recognised head of a "democratic" party, for consistency's sake, if for no higher motive, will scarcely be offended at such a familiarity of address; though he may be yet recent from the possession of the highest true dignity known to the political institutions of nations, and his nameless correspondent one of the humblest of those by whose suffrages it was conferred. I am very sure that you have been thus saluted often enough before, during your long career of politics, by many a supposed friend, toward whom, if you had truly read his heart, you would have had much better reason for displeasure at the liberty.
