This research is structured around the formation image of Onggi, which is a unique traditional storage instrument of Korea. Onggi is used starting from the prehistoric age until now, allowing us to transmit our special taste on fermented food. This life style instrument reflects Korea’s unique culture, emotion, and also elegant natural beauty often shown in other traditional china. The objective of this research is to analyze it’s beautiful formation around color, form, pattern image as well as it’s functions as a life style instrument, and finally redefine the fading beauty of this traditional china.
Onggi reflects natural simplicity and is functional china that is used as a storage instrument. Even though the main purpose of this unique china is to store food, Onggi was deeply involved in various aspects of our ancestor’s lives. Because of this, Onggi has numerous names and classifications depending on firing method, hardness of soil, glaze, baking method, size, function, region and era. Onggi not only has numerous varieties, but also implies comprehensive scientific wisdom. For example, the mouth size of Onggi differs depending on the sunshine and precipitation of the specific region: in the north area, where there is less sunshine and rain the size of mouth gets bigger. Apart from this customized figure that varies upon environment, it takes minimal time for Onggi to restore backto earth, making this instrument nature friendly. As we saw above, there are unlimited excellences of this special china that are not to be found elsewhere. Various studies regarding the superiority of Onggi is actively taking place not only in Korea but also all around the world.
The color image of Onggi formation that is stated in this study is traditional, conventional and unpretentious which is the image that comes from the Onggi itself. The unique brown or soil color of Onggi, can only be created when the soil and special glaze is carefully crafted in a certain order. ‘Color Q’, a hardware developed by Panton, was utilized in order to abstract this peculiar color in each season during 2007 and 2008. Due to the difference of sunshine in each season, the numerical average of abstracted color formulas was calculated. The formula was then sent to IRI, a qualified color research center, and some outstanding results were generated. To our surprise, most of the conventional words that are used to describe the color of Onggi directly matched descriptions from the analytical test result.
This research not only analyzed the color but also studied deeply on the nature friendly tendency, which was mentioned at the beginning of the thesis, and various abstract designs in pattern images of Onggi. Especially, if you are to look closely into the visual images of Onggi, it can be classified into the exterior spiral design and the image patterns that are drawn within it. The unique spiral design is a method that our ancestors used to express volume and matches exactly with the golden section from ancient Greece. The fact that the traditional spiral design from the East matches with the mathematicalformula of the first idealistic and scientific era of West indicates that disregarding region and time, human beings havea rooted tendency to create stable, idealistic, and natural forms. Also, the SooHwaMoon(a pattern that is drawn by finger before the glaze dries) pattern on Onggi is very similar to folk paintings of Chosun dynasty. This implements that folk paintings and Onggi were always a part of commoner’s lives, and their existence stands for the common life itself rather than simple visual or aesthetic value.
Various analyses on formation image of Onggi researched throughout this thesis can be easily spotted in masterpieces of Korean china artists and other researcher’s studies. In conclusion, analysis on Onggi suggests that this specialchina contains continuity upon the historical artistic structure and uniqueness upon the formation image of the object itself.
