This is a report on the recent currents of the studies on mathematics education in Japan based on the collected materials and discussions with professors T. Miwa and N. Nohda at the Mathematics Education Research Room, Tsukuba University in Japan, from December 1986 to June 1987 at which time the writer was visiting Tsukuba University, according to the Teachers College Professors Study Abroad Project of the Ministry of Education supported by 1986 IBRD Education Loan.
In Japan, mathematics education research progresses in two directions (1) find the base of mathematics thinking and problem solving through the investigation of traditional mathematical conceptions of the era from the Meiji age to the early years of the Showa, (2) Research through experimental, analytical methods of the psychology developed in the advanced western countries.
Recently, with the settling and rapid activating of the researches of (2) by young scholars, interchanges and coresearches between America and Japan are widening in the direction of (2). On the other hand, the teachers are keen on research and there are many research associations lead mainly by professors.
Considering these currents of mathematics education of Japan, we give some suggestions to promote the mathematics education of Korea in this report.
