자장(慈藏)의 중국오대산행(中國五臺山行)에서 보이는 문수(文殊)의 가르침에 대한 기록 검토 = 일연(一然)과 민지(閔漬)의 기록차이를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자장의 중국오대산행과 그 과정에서 살펴지는 문수친견(文殊親見) 및 가르침에 대한 내용은, 중국자료에서는 확인되지 않는 국내자료에만 존재하는 기록이다. 국내자료는, 일연의 『삼국유사』에 수록된 기록군과, 민지의 『오대산사적기』 안의 기록의 두 가지이다.
일연과 민지는 서로 다른 정리의 필연성 속에서, 당시 전해지던 자장에 대한 자료들을 각기 정리하고 있다. 그러므로 양자의 자료에 대한 분석과 검토는, 자장에 대한 보다 분명한 이해와 일연과 민지의 정리방식과 관점에 대해서 인지해 볼 수 있게 한다.
일연은 자장에 대해서 범주적인 관점에서 정리하고 있다. 일연이 적고 있는 문수의 가르침에 대한 내용은, 크게 3가지로 정리된다. 첫째는 신라국왕의 신성화에 대한 부분. 둘째는 『화엄경』 4구게를 통한 문수화엄(文殊華嚴)과 관련된 부분. 마지막 셋째는 신라오대산의 개창에 대한 부분이다. 이중 황룡사와 관련된 기록에서 신라국왕의 신성화가 거론되고 있다는 점은, 진흥왕과 선덕왕을 연결해서 당위적인 변증을 하려는 노력으로 이해된다는 점에서 주목된다.
다음으로 민지는, 신라오대산의 개창과 관련해서 전체적인 자장의 전기 자료를 구성하고 있다. 특히 민지는 출전을 명기하고 있는데, 이는 내용에 따른 원전의 이해를 용이하게 해준다는 점에서 자장연구에 도움이 된다. 또 민지는 시간 순으로 사건을 재구성하고 있다. 이는 일연의 범주적인 기록에서 확인되는 불명료한 부분을 해소해줄 수 있다는 점에서 도움이 된다. 이외에도 민지는 자장 생애의 통일적인 구성을 위해서, 일부 내용의 충돌양상을 개변하는 모습도 확인되고 있어 연구의 가치가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The story of Jajangs trip to Chinese Wutaishan, his personal meeting there with Mañjuśri bodhi-sattva, and the teachings he received from Mañjuśri are not recorded in any Chinese documents, only in Korean ones. These Korean records are found in Ilyeons “Samgug Yusa” and Minjis “Odaesan Sajeoggi(五臺山事蹟記).”
Arranged differently based on their unique viewpoints, Ilyeon and Minji included Jajangs story in their books as had been handed down to them in those days. Therefore, an analysis and review of the two records can give us a rather clear understanding about Jajang, as well as the viewpoints of Ilyeon and Minji and the difference in their arrangement of material based on this.
Ilyeon arranged the material about Jajang from a categorical viewpoint. Mañjuśris teaching as recorded by Ilyeon can be roughly arranged into three parts: first, the sanctification of the Sila kings; second, Mañjuśri Avatamska(文殊華嚴) through the four phrases(四句偈) of Avatamska Sutra(華嚴經); third, establishment of Sila Odaesan. The sanctification of Sila kings is mentioned in the record about Hwangyeongsa, which can be understood as Ilyeon trying to make a joint justification for King Jinheung(眞興王) and Queen Seondeog(善德王).
On the contrary, Minji organizes the entire biographical material of Jajang mainly in relation to his establishment of Sila Odaesan. Minji explains the origin of his records, which makes it easy for us to understand the text clearly and to study about Jajang. Furthermore, Minji reconstructs the events recorded chronologically. This helps in understanding the unclean portions of Ilyeons categorical records. Minji modifes a few conflicting affairs to bring about a coherent construction of Jajangs life. In this respect, his material is worth studying.
