The Pritzker Architectural Prize is an award that evaluates the overall architectural world of architects rather than a single building, and it acts as a measure for verifying the gap from global sense by capturing the tendency of the times. Marking its 36th year of foundation, East Asian laureates of the prize consist of 1 Chinese and 6 Japanese laureates. However, despite the increasing external activities through economic and cultural development, Korea still did not produce any laureates. With the recent focus on Asian laureates, this study aims to ponder over the proper direction for Korean architecture by determining the tendency and work characteristics of Pritzker laureates. The process involved five criteria, which are ‘artistic, environmental, suggestive, technological and cultural values’ based on the assessment of Pritzker. Then the characteristics of works selected as laureates were analyzed, based on which the tendency of the architects as well as that of the times in which they were awarded could also be identified. Furthermore, this study is expected to contribute to changing the perception of Koreans and establishing a discourse that would serve as a momentum for growth as a basic research pointing out the direction for Korean architecture.
