PEMFCs(proton exchange membrane fuel cells) needs humidification of reactant gases for high efficiency and long lifetime. In general, membrane humidifiers are used for this purpose. However, membrane humidifier has disadvantages of bulky volume and high cost and increases parasitic power loss of blower. To overcome these problems, humidification by exhaust gas recirculation was studied. Test station of 800W class PEMFC system implementing cathode exhaust gas recirculation was constructed. The fuel cell stack is made of 5 cells of active area 250 cm2. Part of cathode exhaust gas is recirculated and mixed with the incoming ambient air before the air blower. Recirculation ratio was regulated by control valve and measured by gas chromatography. At high recirculation ratio, absolute humidity was increased, but oxygen concentration decreased. Performance of fuel cell stack was reduced by 5~10%.
