지역과 장소의 경계－강원도 천주교와 문화 공동체－ = Border between Region and Place: Gangwon Province's Catholicism and Cultural Community

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the conceptual meaning of the region with a focus on Gangwon province’s Catholicism and discusses the way to research local culture and to promote it. Local culture should be understood through historical and emotional characteristics that are not reduced to a physical place. Although the physical basis of the region must be acknowledged, the visibility of the region functions as a material foundation that enables local residents and visitors to get the experiences of the imagination and emotional projection. A region is a historical and cultural space that opens the horizon of existence. In this perspective, this study provides an overview of the historicity of Gangwon province’s Catholicism. Even if Gangwon province’s Catholicism appears to be merely a minor branch of history, it is in reality an individual totality through which the history of East-West relation and the Joseon Catholic penetrates. Gangwon province’s Catholicism, having the reputation of the first religious village in Korea, represents a series of processes that reach the institutionalization of Pungsuwon, passing through the ordeal of persecution and the strengthening of the potential in Kyo-u-chon. On the other hand, as Gangwon province’s Catholicism connotes a risk of being sunk in the dilemma of cultural universalism and cultural relativism, it calls for the certain kinds of future values ​​and ethical attitudes related to local culture. In order to solve the dilemma of duality between center and periphery, cultural universalism and cultural relativism, this study proposes a cultural community based on the concept of cultural resources, avoiding the concept of cultural identity. A cultural community is a kind of network that revitalizes various cultural resources and, therefore, expands their vitality by bringing them face to face. A cultural community based on the concept of resources has the function of strengthening the cultural ecosystem because it is a dialogue community that summons and activates each cultural resource to each other.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 강원도 천주교를 중심으로 지역의 개념적 의미를 살펴보고 지역문화의 연구 및 활성화 방안을 논구한다. 지역문화는 물리적 장소로 환원되지 않는 역사성과 정서적 특성을 통해 이해해야 한다. 지역의 물리적 기반은 당연히 인정되어야 하지만 지역의 가시성은 지역민과 방문자의 상상 및 정서적 투영을 가능케 하는 물적 토대로 기능한다. 지역은 실존의 지평을 여는 역사 문화 공간이다. 이와 같은 관점에서 본 논문은 강원도 천주교의 역사성을 개관한다. 강원도 천주교는 일견 지엽적 역사의 산물로 나타나지만 실제로는 동서교섭사 및 조선천주교사 전체가 그 안을 관통하는 일종의 개체적 전체이다. 한국 최초의 신앙촌이라는 위상을 가진 강원도 천주교는 박해기의 시련과 교우촌(敎友村)의 잠재력 강화를 거쳐 풍수원 본당으로 제도화되어가는 일련의 과정을 나타낸다. 동시에 강원도 천주교는 중심과 주변의 이분법, 문화보편주의와 문화상대주의의 딜레마에 매몰될 위험을 내포하는바 지역문화와 관련한 미래적 가치와 윤리적 태도를 요청한다. 중심과 주변의 이원성, 문화보편주의와 문화상대주의의 딜레마를 해소하려는 차원에서 본 논문은 문화적 정체성 개념을 지양하고 문화의 자원 개념에 의거한 문화 공동체를 제안한다. 문화 공동체는 다양한 문화 자원을 서로 맞대면시킴으로써 서로를 활성화하고 생명력을 확장하는 문화 네트워크이다. 자원 개념에 기반한 문화 공동체는 각각의 문화 자원을 서로 소환하고 활성화하는 대화 공동체이기 때문에 문화 생태계를 강화하는 기능을 갖는다.
