미국 대각성 운동과 2023 애즈베리 부흥 비교 연구 = A Comparative Study of the American Great Awakening and the 2023 Asbury Revival

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 2023년 애즈베리 부흥을 미국 역사상 제1차 및 제2차 대각성 운동과 비교하여 자세히 분석한 것이다. 2023년 2월 애즈베리 대학교에서 시작된 애즈베리 부흥은 특히 "가장 비종교적인 세대"로 묘사되는 젊은 층에게 깊은 영향을 미쳤으며, 그 영향력은 지역 사회를 넘어 전 세계로 확산되었다. 본 논문은 애즈베리 부흥과 18세기 및 19세기 미국 대각성 운동의 유사점과 차이점을 탐구한다. 조나단 에드워즈와 조지 휫필드와 같은 인물들이 이끈 제1차 대각성 운동은 하나님의 절대 주권과 성경 중심의 부흥을 강조했으며, 찰스 피니와 같은 지도자들이 이끈 제2차 대각성 운동은 인간의 역할, 신인 협력, 그리고 초교파적 연합에 중점을 두었다. 2023년 애즈베리 부흥은 이러한 요소들을 현대적 맥락에서 구현하며, 특히 제1차 대각성 운동의 특징을 반영하였다. 이 부흥은 기도의 준비, 설교에서의 성경에 대한 충실한 준수, 그리고 인간적 조작이 없는 하나님의 주권 중심의 경건을 특징으로 했다. 부흥은 기도, 본질적인 복음 메시지의 전달, 그리고 감정적 자극을 배제한 하나님 중심의 운동이라는 점을 강조하였다. 본 연구는 2023년 애즈베리 부흥이 향후 디지털 시대와 새롭게 등장하는 메타버스 세대에서 일어날 부흥의 중요한 모델이 될 수 있음을 제시하며, 현대적 맥락에서 영적 각성이 어떻게 나타날 수 있는지에 대한 통찰을 제공한다.

This study provides a detailed analysis of the 2023 Asbury Revival by comparing it with the First and Second Great Awakenings in American history. The Asbury Revival, which began in February 2023 at Asbury University, had a profound impact, particularly among a generation often described as "the most non-religious," extending its influence beyond the local community to reach national and global audiences. This paper explores the similarities and differences between the Asbury Revival and the 18th and 19th-century Great Awakenings in the United States. The First Great Awakening, led by figures such as Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, emphasized God's absolute sovereignty and a Scripture-centered revival, while the Second Great Awakening, under leaders like Charles Finney, focused on human agency, synergistic cooperation, and interdenominational unity. The 2023 Asbury Revival embodies these elements within a modern context, particularly reflecting the characteristics of the First Great Awakening. It was marked by deliberate preparation in prayer, faithful adherence to Scripture in preaching, and a piety centered on God's sovereignty, devoid of human manipulation. The revival’s emphasis on prayer, the delivery of essential gospel messages, and the rejection of sensationalism underline its significance as a God-centered movement. This study argues that the Asbury Revival presents a valuable model for future revivals, particularly as they might unfold in the digital age and within the emerging metaverse generation, providing insights into how spiritual awakenings can manifest in contemporary settings.
