This study is to review the operation status, characteristics, and cases of the model school for carbon neutrality through an analysis of the whole school approach (WSA), and to provide directions for environmental education implemented in these model schools in Korea. The findings indicate that while the model schools were relatively strong in curriculum, there were weak in their operational approaches to environmental education. School members participated in cultivating a carbon-neutral culture, and the scope of practices encompassed not only individual but also social practices and participation. The model schools created school facilities and spaces for carbon-neutral practices and carbon footprint monitoring. Some model schools shared their experiences in environmental education with neighboring schools, and also served as a base for environmental education within their communities. Most of the model schools were operated by teachers, while only a few schools showed examples of democratic student participation in school management. Based on the analysis, discussions on the meaning of environmental education implemented in model schools suggested that fostering a culture of carbon-neutral practices should focus on active student participation. From a school management perspective, the spread of environmental education should be promoted through such model schools.
