Martin Buber has interesting with relations among the people. We live in religion, culture and social system. We feel meaning of life in its relation. It is important for human being to existential situation. His philosophy of I and Thou suggests an analysis about existence of human being. He explains three types of I and Thou. The first is relation of I and It, that is, in this relation we deal alter ego with a thing. Secondly in relation of I and you, we deal human being with a person. Thirdly in relation of I and Thou, we deal human being with an eternal being or an eternal You. In this discussion, Buber emphasizes 'meeting', 'dialogue' and 'relation'. Buber's philosophy of I and Thou is important in the study of theology of culture and contemporary hermeneutics.
The purpose of this article aims to find the meaning of Buber's philosophy of I and Thou. So we will explain core points of philosophy of I and Thou and then we will deal Paul Tillich's interpretation about Buber's philosophy. Tillich suggests an existential and mysterious aspects, and relation of religion and culture in Buber's philosophy. Lastly, through interpretation and evaluation about Buber's philosophy, we will comment social responsibility and role of religion, especially christianity in Korea.
