독일 통일과 경제통합 과정에 대한 평가: 한국 언론에 비친 통일방식과 통일비용 논의를 중심으로 = Appraisals of German Unification and Economic Integration: Focused on Modus and Costs of Unification Mirrored at Korean Newspapers

2010 is the year of 20th anniversary of German unification. Korean mass media paid great attention on the process and progress of the so called Feierabend Revolution in Germany. This paper attempts to show the roles and stances of leading Korean newspapers by reporting and commenting on the event in Germany. Special attention is paid on the unification costs and their possible implications for Korean peninsular. Reports and comments of leading Korean newspapers on these themes are collected and analysed. Some findings of the analysis can be summarized as follows: Concerning the unification modus, the conservative wing of press favoured big bang-like unification, while the progressive wing preferred gradual approach. To the political stance of South-Korean government, one wing insists on the strengthening diplomatic relations with super powers surrounding the Korean peninsular, while the other suggested the importance of peaceful dialogues and cooperative relations with North Korea. One wing minds that the collapse of North Korean regime can be a good opportunity to realize the national unification, while the other fears of a national catastrophe. With time passed, the conservative wing stressed more and more the dominant role of economic power of Western Germany as the engine of unification. It insists that South Korean government should apply reciprocity principle instead of the sun shine policy to North Korea. In sum, Korean newspapers are divided in two separate groups, keeping their stance regardless which themes are in concern. This is one reason why the South-South conflict has been reinforced in Korea. Now, what implications can be induced from all these results? The task of national unification can not be based on improvisational tactics. Instead, it requires a vision that includes a comprehensive and consistent plan with long time horizon.
