The purpose of this study is to seek the problems by analyzing the reality of high school students’ career choices in the situation where students are having much confusion in choosing courses, universities and majors, and to search for the direction for the proper career guidance on the basis of the problems. The research questions to achieve this aim are as in the follows.
First, is there statistically significant difference in the motive of entering the university depending on general high school students’ backgrounds(gender, grade, income etc.)?
Second, is there statistically significant difference in the courses and the universities which they want to enter depending on general high school students’ backgrounds?
Third, is there statistically significant difference in the time and method to choose their departments/majors depending on general high school students’ backgrounds?
Fourth, is there statistically significant difference in the factors which affect choosing their majors depending on general high school students’ backgrounds?
Fifth, is there statistically significant difference in the way to obtain information about majors and career experience depending on general high school students’ backgrounds?
The objects of this research are the third grade students of general high schools locacted in Changwon city in Oct, 2012, 430 students were sampled by the random gathering method and questionnaires were used for this research. 419 questionnaires were retrieved and among them excepting 27 questionnaires which were inadequate, 392 questionnaires were used to analyze the data. Using SPSS 18.8 on the assembled data, the across analysis (-test), independent t-test, one-way ANOVA were conducted.
The conclusion can be presented like the followings.
First, as for the university entrance motivation, students responded preparation for the quality required for the jobs, enjoying the campus life, high school graduates' difficulty in getting jobs, and they responded the least that they don't want to get jobs.
Second, as for the relation between the department students wanted and the department they really entered, the students in humanity courses favored social course centered business economics/economics, and those in natural science course favored the departments related with engineering. When it comes to gender, male students wanted to go to engineering departments and women favored medical department centered to the nursing science. They favored social science as their parents have higher incomes.
Third, the largest number of students chooses their majors in their third grade. There is no difference in gender or the income level of their parents but as the students’ academic scores are high, and as their fathers’ schooling is higher, their majors and departments are decided in their earlier ages. Generally, the decision to students' majors are followed by the choice of the universities.
Fourth, the factors affecting students’ major choosing are their own wills. Specifically male students more than female students, and those students who have better school record have more influence in deciding their majors. The difference in their parents’ schooling has no meaning in it. Friends have more effect on it when students’ school records are low.
The influence of school teachers are high as the students' parents have lower income, the tutors' influence was the lowest. Students' interest and aptitude, the relation with the jobs they want to get, and the possibility to get jobs occupy the higher position in their major selection. On the other hand, the suggestion of other people, family conditions and the ads of the university occupy the low level.
Fifth, university homepages are most helpful means to get information about university entrance and majors in every variation such as gender, school record, income level and parents’ schooling. Next come family, seniors, and friends. The above variations have no meaningful difference in the consult about their careers and college entrance, and department guidance and job experience programs. Male students get more help with the lectures about their career than female. As for the level in the information recognition of the majors, the possible jobs after graduation, the required school scores and SAT scores are important.
