한국인의 증 4도(tritone paradox) 지각

국문 초록 (Abstract)

중 4도 역설(tritone paradox)은 옥타브 관계로 이루어진 복합음이 한 쌍을 이루어 연속으로 들려질 때 발생한다. 이 복합음의 진폭은 종모양을 이루고 있으며 쌍을 이룬 음고 집합들은 옥타브의 반인 중 4도 만큼 떨어져 있다. 이러한 형태로 주어진 음고 집합 쌍은 어떤 음고에서는 상향으로 지각되나 다른 음고에서는 하향으로 지각된다. 또한 어떤 특정한 음고에서 어떤 피험자에게 상향으로 지각되던 음고 집합 쌍은 다른 피험자에게는 하향으로 지각되는 차이를 보인다.
Deutsch(1991,1994)의 연구에서는 피험자의 중 4도 역설 지각 현상에 대한 지역간 차이가 발견되었다. 이와 같은 중 4도 음고 집합 형태를 캘리포니아 지역의 피험자가 상향 음고라고 지각할 때 영국 출신의 피험자는 하향이라고 지각했다. 이 연구는 이와 같은 중 4도 역설(tritone paradox)의 지각 현상이 한국인에게도 적용되는 현상인지를 반복 검토한 것이다. 즉, 한국어를 사용하는 피험자에서도 중 4도 역설의 지각에 대한 차이가 있는지를 조사했다. 서울과 경상도 출신의 피험자가 비교되었다. 한국인들의 중 4도 역설 지각 현상은 미국 캘리포니아 출신의 피험자들과 유사한 양상을 나타냈다. 대다수의 한국 피험자들은 B와 C#과 D# 음고 집합을 최고 음고 집합으로 지각하고 있지만 G#을 최고 음고 집합으로 지각하고 있는 집단도 있었다. 이 점으로 보아 한국인들도 음고 지각에 있어 다른 지각 표상이 있다고 여겨진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The tritone paradox occurs when an ordered pair of tones is presented, with each tone consisting of a set of octave-related components whose amplitudes are scaled by a bell-shaped envelope, and the pitch classes of the tones separated by a half-octave. Such a pattern is heard as ascending in one key, but as descending in a different key. Further the pattern in any one key is heard as ascending by some listeners but as descending by others. In a study by Deutsch(1991, 1994), a difference was found in perception of the tritone paradox between subjects who had grown up in two different geographical regions. When the Californian group tended to hear the pattern as ascending, the Englisth group tended to hear it as descending, and vice versa. This raises the question of whether regional differences also exist between Korean speakers and English speakers in the way this pattern is perceived.
This study examined the percepts of subjects who had grown up in Korea. Three groups of subjects who had grown up in Seoul, Cholla province and Kyongsang province were also compared. In general, a highly significant similarity between Korean group and Californian group was obtained, and there were also differences between Korean groups. From this and other analyses of the data, it is concluded that perception of the tritone paradox also exists among Korean speakers.
