A railroad station originated from a place which provided horses for travelers. A railroad station is the starting point as well as the central point. It is also a place for social behaviors of trade and informational exchange. Because of the increasement and development of social behaviors, the circumstance of the railroad station easily developed into the city. In Europe, the railroad appeared as a central means of transportations since the industrial Revolution, and the status of the railroad station became improved as the city planning was established to focus on the railroad station.
A railroad station is not only a facility of transporting passengers and freights but also a place of cultural exchange, and it has played these roles in local regions. The history of Korean railroad station has long history from that Keonginseon of 33.2km between Jeimulpo and Nolyangjin was opened in 1899 to that the high speed rail was opened and operated in 2004.
Due to the service of the high speed rails, it takes a little more than 3 hours from Seoul to Busan, as a result ubiquitous zone of life was formed. The development of the high speed railroad station of important cities in Japan and Europe which faster opened the high speed rail than that of Korea has influenced city planning in the aspects of the city's space, the city's structure, the use of the earth, and the transportation system, and the histories of the high speed rail in each Korean cities have developed variously according to different city's conditions.
Current Korean railroad stations which serve the high speed rail are Seoul station, YoungSan station, GwangMyeong station, CheonAn·ASan station, DaeJeon station(SeoDaeJeon station and DongDaeJeon station), DongDaeGu, MilYang station, GuPo station, BuSan station, NonSan station, IkSan station, GwangJu station, MokPo station and so on.
Opening the high speed rail transcends the limitation of space and time which existing rails have, and it brings the extension of space and reduction of time. In other word, the high speed railroad station should be considered that it transcends a physical space for simple trade and the traffic connection and a social space for informational exchange, and it becomes a core space of trying to harmony with a city as the center of local society.
However, Korean government has not effective developmental system which accepted complex functions and needs of various interested parties, unit businesses which do not consider areas near the railroad station are promoted, and side effects like congestion of the railroad station's circumstance are caused because of heavy development based on commercialism.
This study is focused on Ik_san station which is selected as the history of the high speed rail, identifies local contexts and cultural features of Ik_san, and tries to plan comprehensive and complex high speed rail's history. The history of the high speed rail should be transformed from simple passing point as a means of transportations to center of life, and in order to do so, the railroad station should be a place of having absorption force as well as an attractive place with various programs. In addition, the railroad station should be set walk-friendly environment near it, and it is required the network which supports various public transportations and required consideration about strengthening the role as center without clashes with other interests.
Therefore, planning processes of the high speed rail's history which are drawn from this study are like the followings.
First, I will identify the features of existing railroad station and the high speed railroad station, and I will draw systematic plans from theorization's process through the analysis of foreign developed cases.
Second, I will analyze functions which are required as the center of local region over a very wide area, local cultural features, and the human society, will complexify programs of considering the function as the center of living's zone which includes public transportations, and then I will establish planes to maximize functions of a center.
Third, I will draw plans of forming local distinctive symbol and space, which Ik_san high speed rail's history only has, through building various openspace and making beautiful scene.
This project will be useful for providing desirable space of complex high speed rail's history which overcomes spatial features of existing rails' history, consider local culture and social features and function as the center of life's zone with public transportations.
