논항구조로 본 영어 문장 5형식 = Five Forms of English Predicate from the Argument Structure Perspective

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For a long time C. T. Onions’ five different types of verbal predicate in English have been considered as fundamentals in the grammar learning in Korea. Recent studies have pointed out the problems such as an obligatory adjunct, type alternations and the inconsistency in the criteria for the classification. In this paper, however, we have found out that the five forms of Onions’ analysis are preferably matched to each of the central argument structure types without any further stipulation. We, thus have argued that the classification criteria for the predicate types are in fact key arguments of the verb rather than either the function or the form of the obligatory elements in sentences. The apparent problems are not real if the predicate types are analyzed properly through the event structure which is a recent version of the argument structure. In particular, the passive-active sentence pair are assigned different predicate types respectively just because they have different event structures.
