This study is carried out to propose the planning index of school forests in Gyeonggido in order to make them better. For the purpose this study we selected 42 among 75 school forests constructed during 2005 year in Gyeonggido. All of 42 school forests are surveyed and analysed by frequency, cross tabulation, and group average analysis with SPSS 12.0 version.
The present condition of school forests is analysed with some items like surrounding environment, centralization, and locational characteristic as a nominal point. And other items are tree, shrub, pavement, fruit tree, transplantation, evergreen tree, and rest facility content percentage as a proportion point.
After reviewing the literature and analysis of present condition of school forests, we constructed the conceptual framework and have formulated by the hypothesis of this research. We had obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed 98 students of the major of landscape architecture of Hankyong University in 2007.
The total size of 42 school forests is 46,769㎡. The average size of each school forest is 1,025㎡ in the case of an elementary school, 1,112㎡ in a middle school, and 2,219㎡ in a high school,
The total number of trees are 3,782. The average numbers of each school forest are 94.88 trees in the case of an elementary school, 76.87 trees in a middle school, and 128.5 trees in a high school.
Results of analysis of the present condition of school forests showed that primary variables of tree health are soil compaction and the depth of soil filling, They are most serious factors to deteriorate trees health.
Soil compaction was the most serious factor to deteriorate the tree health of school forests. This soil compaction is more advanced due to frequent uses by students and visitors, which further worsen the tree health. And we need to prepare enough depth of soil filling in order to give trees better growing environments.
Based on the relationships between the tree health and growing environments, it is suggested that trees inside of the school forest should be managed to give them more growing spaces and less abuses. The minimum area of trees inside of the school forest for good growth condition should be within the drip lines.
We have found that the minimum percentage of trees content is 0.134, which means that we need to plant over-134 trees by the size of 1,000㎡ green space. In the case of shrubs we need to plant over-3,582 shrubs by the size of 1,000㎡ green space. In the case of pavement we need to pave under-18.6% of total size of the school forest area. At last, in the case of an evergreen tree we need to plant over-39.1 trees by 100 trees.
The research results suggest that the construction planning index of Gyeonggido school forest be recommended in planning and development process of the construction project carried out every year.
The approach and analysis method adoped by this research is highly useful for an evaluation of Gyeonggido school forests. It is recommended that more numerous questionnaire among groups such as public officials, teachers, parents, residents, and experts be preformed in the near future.
