로렌스의 시에 나타난 회화적 요소 = Pictorial Elements in the Poetry of D. H. Lawrence

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to point out some pictorial elements in D. H. Lawrence`s poetry while focussing on his use of color imagery. It may be natural that Lawrence, who had a great interest in painting picture and visual arts, attempted to embody these artistic effects in his poetry. Lawrence revealed his idea of pictures while discussing his view of Cezanne in his long essay entitled, "Introduction to These Paintings." In this essay, Lawrence insists that Cezanne`s still lifes embody his so called `appleyness.` `Appleyness,` which is more like the thing itself, avoids "so called humanness, the personality, the `likeness,` the physical cliche." `Appleyness` perceives the unmoving material in terms of mobile and senses `all-aroundness` and `insideness` of things by instinct and intuition. This paper argues that the pictorial elements along with the color imagery used in some of Lawrence`s poetry strengthen the poet`s view of `appleyness.` Red color is related with `insideness` and `all-aroundness` and blue and green are used as background colors to signify the flux of the universe and to suggest harmony and life. And yellow and gold are used to reveal the sense of kinetic and sensual movement. To sum up, Lawrence tries to adapt his theory of art into his poetry.
