Remarks on Synthetic Compounding

Lim, Jongseong. 2004. Remarks on Synthetic Compounding. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-4, 635-660. It is assumed by some authors that synthetic compounds are governed by syntactic principles or rules related to argument structure, but primary ones are by lexical rules. The rationale is that synthetic compounds inherit the argument structure of the verb phrase, while primary ones do not. Two diagnostics are pointed out as evidences: syntactic parallelism and semantic compositionality. The main purpose of this paper is not to refine the syntactic theories, but to find motivated answers to the question: what makes synthetic and primary compounds look different from each other? First, I will examine whether the design features are correctly describing synthetic compounds, and I will show that they are not definite indices with which one can distinguish synthetic compounds from primary ones. I will propose a different approach based on the conception that synthetic and primary compounds have distinct internal constructions. (The City University of Seoul)
