The purpose of this study was to design a personality education class with
the theme or the contemporary poem "Even the Grass Leaf Has the Scar". For this
study, action learning was used to embody a personality education encompassing
individuals, human relationship and community. The action learning is assumed
for the group activities, while an introspective learning is designed to solve
the actual problems. The learners would appreciate the contemporary poems and
thereupon, apply their themes to cultivate their personality through the action
learning activities.
The researcher reviewed various preceding studies regarding the personality
education. Only a few preceding studies associated the Korean Language subject
with the action learning, and no preceding studies researched into the
contemporary poems for the action learning. Thus, this study is the first
attempt to use the action learning to suggest a pedagogic for the contemporary
poems and the personality education.
In 2015 Amendment National Curriculum of the Korean Language, the personality
education is stressed, and thus, the researcher judged that it would be
possible under the current National Curriculum to realize the personality
education in the middle school Korean Language class because the personality
core competence and the criteria for the academic achievements are closely
related with the personality education. In addition, the contemporary poems as
the material for the personality education are closely and timely related with learners' ordinary life, and therefore, the middle schoolers could well
understand and apply them to cultivate their expressive competence as well as
beautiful personality through diversified metaphoric expressions of the poems.
Jeong Ho Seung's poems have their own unique emotions stirring learners'
emotion, and further, they could well motivate the learners to not only
introspect on themselves and be concerned with their community, and therefore,
they could be used effectively to cultivate the personality.
The researcher reviewed the personality core competences suggested by 2015
Amendment National Curriculum as well as scholars' suggested personality
virtues. The researcher reviewed the conditions of the contemporary poem
education in reference to the core personality competences suggested by 2015
Amendment National Curriculum, and then, examined the conditions of the
contemporary poem education in reference to 2015 Amendment of Middle School
Korean Language textbooks. As a result, it has been found that the textbooks
cover individuals' internal dimension and person-to-person personality
education activities but that the personality education at the dimension of
individual vs community is poor. Thus, 5 textbooks carrying Jeong Ho Seung's
poems were reviewed critically. As a result, it was found that the activities
at the level of community fell short, and thus, the researcher attempted to
complement them to design a teaching and learning method.
This study suggested an action learning class with the theme 'Jeong Ho
Seung's "Even the Grass Leaf Has the Scar". Thus, the researcher adjusted the
action learning procedures to the contemporary poem class, and then, designed a
4-session class for the middle school 2nd graders. The teaching and learning
method was designed specifically to expand the personality education. All in
all, this study may well be significant in that it used Jeong Ho Seung's
contemporary poem "Even the Grass Leaf Has the Scar" to design the teaching and
learning method for the personality education through the contemporary poems.
Through such class, the students are expected not only to learn about the
contemporary poems not only cognitively but also to experience through
practices and internalize the personality thereof.
