This study employed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of group counseling programs designed to alleviate cultural adaptation stress and enhance the adjustment to university life among Chinese international students. For this purpose, 20 relevant studies were selected from the RISS Academic Information Service, KISS Academic Database, and the National Assembly Library Online Database, and analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) program. The results of this study are as follows. First, the overall effect size of group counseling programs targeting Chinese international students was 1.337, indicating a large effect size across all domains, including personal, school, social, and cultural systems. Second, among the types of programs, group counseling using art media such as music and art, as well as those based on psychological therapy theories, demonstrated large effect sizes, whereas integrative programs showed medium effect sizes. Third, regarding the mode of group operation, face-to-face programs showed the largest effect size. Online groups also had a large effect size, though smaller than face-to-face groups. Programs that combined face-to-face and online app-based approaches showed a medium effect size, but this was not statistically significant. Fourth, based on the number of sessions, programs with 5-9 sessions and those with 10 or more sessions showed large effect sizes, whereas those with fewer than 5 sessions showed medium effect sizes, but the moderating effects related to session number were not significant. Based on these findings, the study discusses its limitations and provides suggestions for future research.
