봅 하웃즈바르트의 진보신앙 비판과 기독교 경제철학: 한국 사회에 대한 함의를 중심으로 = Bob Goudzwaard's Critique of the Faith in Progress and Christian Economic Philosophy: Implications for Korean Society

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 네덜란드 개혁주의 경제 사상가 봅 하웃즈바르트(Bob Goudzwaard)의 기독교 경제철학을 분석함으로써 현대 경제학이 전제해 온 가치중립성의 주장에 비판적으로 접근한다. 본 연구는 하웃즈바르트의 주요 저작에 대한 문헌분석을 통해 그의 ‘진보 신화’ 비판과 경제주의(economism) 개념을 중심으로 경제철학의 핵심 내용을 고찰한다. 연구 결과, 하웃즈바르트는 경제 체제를 단순한 기술적·제도적 장치가 아니라 궁극적 종교적 헌신에 의해 형성되는 문화적 표현으로 이해하였으며, 경제 성장이 그 자체로 목적화되는 경제주의가 발전과 생산성, 시장 자율성을 절대화함으로써 인간과 공동체, 창조 세계에 대한 규범적 책임을 약화시킨다고 진단하였다. 또한 본 연구는 이러한 통찰을 한국 사회의 압축적 산업화와 고도성장 경험에 적용하여, 경제 성장이 물질적 번영을 가져왔음에도 인간의 삶을 경쟁과 확장의 논리로 환원하는 문화적 패러다임을 강화하였음을 논의한다. 이에 대한 대안으로 제시된 하웃즈바르트의 ‘돌봄의 경제’는 세속 경제 담론뿐 아니라 교회 공동체에도 신앙과 실천의 도덕적·영적 기초를 재검토할 것을 요청한다. 비록 그의 구상이 구체적 정책 설계 차원에서 추가적인 보완을 필요로 하지만, 그의 사상은 한국 사회에서 신앙과 학문의 통합을 촉진하고 경제 활동을 청지기적 책임과 공공선의 관점에서 재구성하기 위한 중요한 이론적 토대를 제공한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study critically examines the claim of value neutrality in modern economics through an analysis of the Christian economic philosophy of Dutch Reformational economist Bob Goudzwaard. Through a literature-based analysis of Goudzwaard’s major works, the study explores the core themes of his economic thought, focusing on his critique of the “faith in progress” and his concept of economism. The findings indicate that Goudzwaard understood the economic system not merely as a technical or institutional mechanism but as a cultural expression shaped by ultimate religious commitments. He argued that economism, in which economic growth becomes an end in itself, weakens normative responsibility toward human beings, communities, and the created order by absolutizing development, productivity, and market autonomy. Furthermore, this study applies Goudzwaard’s insights to the context of South Korea’s compressed industrialization and rapid economic growth. While economic growth has contributed significantly to material prosperity, it has also reinforced a cultural paradigm that reduces human flourishing to the logic of competition and expansion. As an alternative, Goudzwaard’s vision of a “caring economy” calls not only secular economic discourse but also Christian communities to reconsider the moral and spiritual foundations of faith and practice. Although his proposals require further development at the level of concrete policy design, his thought provides an important theoretical framework for promoting the integration of faith and scholarship and for reorienting economic activity toward stewardship and the common good in contemporary Korean society.
