The early detection and accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric cancer, play a crucial role in enhancing patient survival rates and treatment effectiveness. However, the diagnosis can be challenging in cases where symptoms are subtle or asymptomatic. Endoscopy is a commonly used diagnostic tool, but it requires a high level of expertise from specialists to accurately identify diseases. By integrating artificial intelligence with endoscopic images, AI can assist in the diagnosis process, reduce missed cases, enable early treatment, and ultimately improve patient survival rates. Previous studies have primarily focused on disease classification and mAP(Mean Average Precision) improvement, but limited attention has been given to addressing the reliability of medical data, which often suffer from imbalances and limited availability. In this study, we propose a novel solution to tackle the challenge of imbalanced and sparse medical image data by introducing model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML) into the You Only Look Once (YOLO) model with meta-recognition (YOLO-MR). Experimental results demonstrate that the conventional YOLO model achieves a low mAP of 41.7%, significantly influenced by data imbalance. Although traditional data augmentation methods provide a modest improvement of 65.2%, our proposed YOLO-MR model achieves a remarkable mAP of 96%. This represents a 54.3% increase in mAP compared to the existing YOLO model, effectively reducing the mAP gap between different disease classes and addressing data imbalances. Our study showcases the effectiveness of innovative techniques such as MAML and residual blocks in resolving data imbalances in medical image recognition. The findings hold considerable potential for addressing the problem of limited and imbalanced medical data in the healthcare field. Further research and implementation of these techniques can contribute to improving the reliability and mAP of disease diagnosis, ultimately benefiting patient outcomes.
