대중가요의 정치화: 대선운동에서 사용된 대중가요에 대한 감정적 반응 = Politicizing Popular Songs: Understanding Emotional Responses to Popular Songs in Presidential Elections

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국 대통령 선거운동에서 아티스트들이 자신의 노래를 캠페인 송으로 사용하는 것을 반대하는 모습을 종종 볼 수 있다. 올해에만 해도, 닐 영, 마이클 스타이프(R.E.M), 브라이언 메이(Queen)는 도널드 트럼프가 자신들의 노래를 홍보용으로 사용하는 것에 반대를 표명했다. 그 이유 중 하나는 트럼프가 노래를 사용함으로 인해 이후 그 노래를 청취하는 방식이 달라질 수 있기 때문이었다. 노래에 대한 감정적 반응은 시간이 지나면서 달라진다. 가사와 아티스트의 이미지, 음악적 요소들과 그 노래를 듣는 청중 집단의 가치관에 따라 변화될 수 있다. 따라서 도널드 트럼프가 닐 영의 “Rockin` in the Free World”를 캠페인 송으로 사용했을 때, 이 노래의 역설적인 코러스는 현재의 상황을 편안하게 느끼게끔 만든다. 노래를 듣는 집단의 맥락에서 이러한 반응은 “다시 미국을 위대하게 만들자”라는 도널드 트럼프의 수사에 반하는 것이다. 이 글에서 나는, 노래가 대선 캠페인에 사용될 때 그 노래의 의미가 재구축되는 방식을 살펴보려 한다. 이를 위해 노래가 후보 측의 전반적인 수사에 적용되는 방식과, 정치적으로 사용되기 전에 그 노래에 내포되어 있었던 아티스트의 가치관과 공동체의 가치관을 살펴볼 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Keeping up with United States presidential campaigns today, it is not uncommon to find some artist censuring a candidate for using their popular song as a campaign song. Just this past year, Neil Young, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., and Brian May of Queen spoke out against president elect Donald Trump`s use of their songs at campaign events. One reason for refusing this publicity is that Trump`s usage of the song colors later hearings of the song; emotional response to the song is conditioned over time by the song`s lyrics, the artist`s image, its association with the values of the listening community, contexts in which it is played, and the musical elements of the song. So when Donald Trump uses Neil Young`s “Rockin` in the Free World,” the song`s ironic chorus becomes an invitation to be comfortable with the current status quo, given that the context in which the community will hear it is against Donald Trump`s “Make America Great Again” rhetoric. In this paper, I will examine the ways in which a song`s meaning is reconstituted when played in presidential campaigns by looking at how the song fits into the overall rhetoric of the campaign and by looking at the artist`s values and communities` values that surrounded the song before its political usage.
