This thesis is to analyze the misconceptions or fallacies in Abang_Gangyeok_Go(= the book dealing with the territorial matters of three ancient countries, Ko-Gu-Ryeo, Baek_Je and Shin-Ra in korean history, which was written by a scholar, Jeong Yak Yong near the end of Lee-Jo Dynasty). the difference between this study and the other studies made by some scholar in the past is that this one is to review and criticize the distorted territorial accounts of three ancient countries which were treated in indirect way by the author and have not been widely known in full detail.
The great problems in the author's recognition of the territory of Ko-Gu-Ryeo are as follows.
First, where Pyeong_yang, its capital, was situated is the greatest question at issue. Jeong considered that the Pyeong-Yang area of present time had been firmly under the domination of Ko-Gu-Ryeo from about the 3rd century and that it had been designated as the capital of Ko-Gu-Ryeo from the 4th century. However, until the early 4th century, Nak-Rang which was ong of chinese colony states had firmly existed in this region.
Therefore, it was after the 5th century that Ko-Gu-Ryeo took the Pyeong-Yang area and certainly made the territory of it. In regard to the recognition of south Pyeong-Yang area, Jeong commented that the location of the south Pyeong-Yang area was around Jang_An_Seong Castle in the southern part of Pyeong-Yang. However, the thrth is that southern Pyeong-Yang area was not in Pyeong-Yang area belonging to Pyeong-An-Nam -Do but around Jae-Ryeong area in Whang-Hae-Do.
Second, Jeong mentioned that Ko-Gu-Ryeo had never advanced its military force into the south of Han River. But his comment was irrelevant, bacause GKo-Gu-Ryeo had surely made inroad into the south of Han River and conquered the central and southern part of Korean Penisular from the 4th through the 5th century.
Third, in regard to the period in which Ko-Gu-Ryeo had conquered Yo-Dong region in Manchuria, Jeong considered that the conquest had not been possible until the 6th century. However, it is apparent that the country extended its influence into Yo-Dong area in the 1st century and had the firm domination of it through the 4th and 5th centuries.
According to Jeong's consideration of the territory of Baek-Je, the country had already expanded its territory to Neung-Seong River, a branch stream of Dae-Dong River to the north and to Jeon-Ra-Do region to the south through the late 1st and the early 2nd centuries.
At that time, however, Baek-Je was one of the small countries which belonged to Ma-Han. the power of the country was so weak that it had little choice but to plan the unpracticable measures which had never been taken in realty to defend itself or but to submit tamely to the aggression from Nak-Rang, Mal-Gal or Ma-Han itself. It was after the 4th century that the country really dominated the Jeon-Ra-Do regionl. Therefore, Jeong's consideration of the territory or Baek-Je early in its era stretched the truth.
With respect to his recognition of the territory of Shin-Ra, he stated that the country had dominated the north-eastern part of Korean Peninsular as its territory through the 3rd to the 4th century.
However, his recognition resuled from failure to notice the information recorded in Sam-Guk-Sa-Gi, the history of ancient three Korean countris. As Nak-Rang and Mal-Gal exercised their influence over the territory to the north of Shin-Ra until the early 4th century, Shin-Ra was able to advanve its military force in the late 4th century. Before the early 4th century, the chief aim of Shin-Ra to use its military power was to conquer Jin-Han Federation around its territory, and so the country could not afford to move its military force to the north to Ham-Gyeong-Nam-Do or Kang-Won_Do. Therefore, Jeong's recognition of Shin-Ra territory is also the subject of critical examination.
