학술 운동으로서의 역사 연구의 길 = Walking the Path of Historical Research as an Academic Movement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1989년 대학원에 입학한 후 35년간 역사학자로서 오늘날, 즉 현재가 끊임없이 과거를 소환하는 현실을 살았다. 필자가 역사 연구에 발을 내디딜 무렵 대학원 진학은 곧 학술 운동으로의 투신을 의미했다. 당시 학술 운동은 역사학이 비록 과거를 대상으로 하는 학문이지만 무엇보다 ‘지금 여기’, 현재적 문제 의식을 갖고 진보에 기여하는 운동적 성격을 지녀야 한다는 당위의 실천을 의미했다. 지난 35년간 필자의 역사 연구는 과거사를 다루던, 현재사를 다루던 언제나 현실 비판적인 문제의식을 담고 있었다.
필자의 학술 운동으로서의 연구 여정은 세 길로 나뉜다. 첫째 민중적 민족주의 역사학의 자장 속에서 민족운동사를 연구하고 실천적 역사학의 계보를 역사운동으로 개념화하는 민족주의 역사학의 길을 걸었다. 둘째 한국 근대 민주주의 역사상을 구축하고 역사의 시민화를 주창하며 그것을 시민 역사로 개념화한 민주주의 역사학의 길을 걸었다. 셋째 지금은 국가, 시장, 사회, 시간 등 근대성을 표상하는 대표적 개념을 중심으로 보편사로서의 한국 근(현)대사를 구축하는 연구의 길을 내는 중이다. 개념을 기반으로 한 보편사 연구를 모색하게 된 계기는 한국 근현대 민주주의 역사 3부작 집필 작업과 역사 철학에 대한 탐구를 통해 마련되었다.

Since I enlisted in the post-graduate school back in 1989, for 35 years I led a life as a historian who can only be keenly aware of the present which just keeps calling the past from oblivion. At the time when I began my studies, to the Student movement community, enlisting in a post-graduate school immediately meant one’s engagement in the Academic movement. Whether the topic I would tackle for the last 35 years was about past history or present history, I always tried to maintain a critical point of view on the subject.
During my life as a professional scholar, and on the path of historical research (as an academic endeavor and a movement), my journey diverged into total of three directions.
First, within the spirit of People Nationalism, I continued to study the history of National movements. I also pursued such type of historical study as it would help us define the long history and lineage of active historical studies as a form of Historical movement.
Secondly, I tried to establish a Democratic historical vision, which has never been fully realized in a historical context concerning modern and contemporary history of Korea. I continued to call for the expansion of qualities such as democracy and citizenship in historical studies, and tried to conceptualize such expansion in my own pursuit of ‘Citizen history.’ Thirdly, right now I am trying to situate the Korean modern and contemporary history as part of a universal history based upon structural concepts such as state, market and society.
