(Background and Purpose) As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of patients with anxiety and depression increased by 25%. Subsequently, the World Health Organization's latest project in 2022 identified mental health as a global priority, further demonstrating the urgency of mental health support. Against this background, the field of art healing, which combines design, aesthetics, and psychotherapy functions with public space, is also receiving increasing attention. With its unique interactive and immersive characteristics, New Media Art pushes the boundaries of expression of traditional art, providing multi-sensory immersive experiences through technological innovation, effectively relieving stress and showing a more cost-effective healing model. Against this background, the objective of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of new media art and therapeutic public spaces, aiming to construct a framework of interaction between new media art, the audience, and space. The study explores the expressive characteristics of new media art in this complex relationship and examines the connection between new media art and mental health, providing theoretical guidance and support for future design and research on therapeutic public spaces. (Methods) This study employs both literature review and case study methodologies. The literature review is based on research in new media art and spatial characteristics, exploring the concept and general features of new media art, as well as the characteristics of therapeutic public spaces. Following this, the research utilizes case studies of therapeutic public spaces that integrate new media art, conducting an expansive analysis of both domestic and international examples, and drawing relevant conclusions, (Results) According to theoretical research, new media art is characterized by four key features: interactivity, variability, multimedia integration, and virtuality. Additionally, therapeutic public spaces exhibit four key features: affordance, emotional expression and perception, interactivity, and supportiveness. Based on the aforementioned theoretical analysis, the interaction model between new media art and therapeutic public spaces was constructed, leading to the identification of three new characteristic keywords: embodiment, surreality, and intersubjectivity. (Conclusions) The application of new media art in art-healing public space reveals the potential value of new media art in emotion regulation and psychotherapy. A New media art provides multi-modal artistic experience, promotes experience sharing among different subjects, and opens up new methods and paths for mental health strategies of related groups. The interactive model of 'New Media Art-Works-Audience-Space' constructed in this study explains that New Media Art breaks down the boundaries of traditional art expression, and expands the audience's aesthetic dimension and artistic experience. This achievement provides a new theoretical framework and cognitive perspective for the future construction and application of new media art in art-healing public space.
