Poetry of Victor Hugo is unrolled on the ground as well as under the ground. For Hugo, space underground has special significance in two dimensions. Epistemologically he always want to pierce into surface to get to the essence. Ontologically he hope to dwell in deep and intimate space to have visions and meet the Infinity.
This study focuses on the underground that has ambivalents values, namely negative or positive. Hugo's underground is regarded in three aspects, space of imprisonment, space of intimacy and space of salvation.
Space underground of imprisonment is conscidered as cruel place that deprives human's liberty. For fumans' well-being, on the contrary, Hugo imprisons those who have victimized people as vampire. He put dictator in sewage, Napoleon Ⅲ and his entourage in underground prison, 'Chaos' in abyss.
Space underground of intimacy, is for Hugo, the place that protect safely from danger and permit to meditate without any disturbance. At Cave of visions, as Yona in the belly of a Whale, the dweller in deep and intimate place will born to another person who recognize the world more clearly.
Underground at first as abysmal chasm where Satan has fallen for his sin, is changed to space of salvation in Hugo's imagination of intimacy and depth. Hugo mitigates negatives elements to evolve them into the positives elements little by little. Hugo changes fall into descent(he attachs on Satan small wings), darkness to water, prison into place of meditation, mortal space to space of rehabilitation. At any dark and deep place he would be, Hugo make it intimate place to meditate and to have visions.
