小泉八雲の再話と『夜窓鬼談』 = Lafcadio Hearn’s Retold Stories and Yasōkidan

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Yasōkidan, written by Ishikawa Kousai (1833-1918), is regarded as a notableexample of Japanese Chinese-writing weird [kaiki] novels in Meiji Era, and the workwas fairly famous among intellectuals at that time. Koizumi Yakumo (also knownas Lafcadio Hearn) studied texts included in Yasōkidan and applied some stories forhis own literary works. Koizumi Yakumo’s three novels, The Story of O-Tei, Ofa Mirror and a Bell (Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, 1904) andThe Story of Kwashin Koji (A Japanese Miscellany, 1901) are appropriated fromYankon Syattai, Kitokukin and Kashinkoji in Yasōkidan, respectively.
We can find an illustration in Yankon Syattai of Yasōkidan which is the originaltext of Koizumi Yakumo’s The Story of O-Tei. I have investigated how KoizumiYakumo was influenced by this illustration. In addition, Koizumi Yakumo’s Of aMirror and a Bell are appropriated from Kitokukin of Yasōkidan, and at the sametime Kitokukin is appropriated from Ryousai Shii [Liaozhai Zhiyi]. I have illuminatedhow Koizumi Yakumo retold the stories through his three novels, The Story of O-Tei,Of a Mirror and a Bell and The Story of Kwashin Koji, which are adopted fromYasōkidan. And I also investigated how he appropriated the stories from Yasōkidanand then wrote his own weird, fascinating novels.
