현대미술에 표현된 캐릭터와 웹툰 콘텐츠 개발로 표현된 작품 연구 : 연구자의 작품분석을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

코로나19 이후 인류의 삶은 빠르게 변화하였고 사회 전반에 변화의 가속이 붙기 시작하면서 고도로 발달한 정보기술(IT)과 인공지능(AI)으로 미디어, 디지털 플랫폼이 다양화되고 대변혁의 시대가 만들어졌다. 삶의 방식이 뒤집히면서 경제, 과학, 교육, 환경, 복지, 문화, 예술 등의 영역이 흔들리기 시작했고 격변하는 상황 속에 우리는 새로운 형태의 활동 영역을 구축하였다.
온, 오프라인 형식의 유동성 있는 교육과 차별화된 경험과 소비, 다매체를 통한 다양한 관점과 융합 예술 행위 등 낯설지만 익숙한 나름의 방식으로 뉴 노멀 시대에 적응해 간다. 위기인 동시에 새로운 기회 활용이 가능한 뉴 노멀 시대로 사회망은 더욱 쉽게 형성되고 개인의 가치와 욕구 충족이 중요시되었다.
이러한 갈증 해소를 위해 자신의 관심사를 파악하고 자기 계발 등을 통해 성취감과 욕구를 충족시키고 더 많은 안정감과 만족감을 얻고자 폭넓은 시각으로 여러 분야를 두루두루 섭렵하고자 한다. 특히 요즘은 예술에 대한 관심도가 높아 다양한 소비 활동으로 문화적 만족감을 충족한 결과 디지털화 확대 현상을 초래하였다. 한 조사에 따르면 디지털화의 다각화, 보편화, 일상화 현상이 뚜렷하게 보이고 대중문화와 예술이 융합되면서 음악, 영화, 영상, 게임, 웹툰, 웹소설, 오디오책, e-book 등의 이용 경험으로 삶에서 문화가 차지하는 중요성을 높이 평가하는 특성이 드러났으며 문화적 취향과 향유 수준이 진화되고 있음을 보여주는 긍정적인 결과로 나타났다. 예술과 문화 콘텐츠에 대한 접근성이 향상되었고, 이는 사람들이 더 많은 문화적 만족감을 누릴 수 있음을 의미한다. 시대적 변화와 기술의 발전, 사회적 환경의 변화에 따라 예술이 어떻게 적응하고 진화하며 새로운 가치를 창출하는지 보여준다. 이처럼 디지털 서비스 및 플랫폼이 보편화되는 과정에서 디지털 콘텐츠 소비와 디지털 커뮤니케이션 도구 사용 증대 등으로 대중과 예술의 거리가 좁혀지고 소통을 통해 지속적으로 성장하고 있음을 체감한다.
대중매체가 예술적 표현의 주요 장르로 자리 잡으며 예술은 단순히 변화에 적응하는 것을 넘어, 시대를 선도하고 새로운 가치를 창출하며, 인간과 사회를 깊이 성찰하게 하는 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 현대미술에서 캐릭터의 활용은 감정을 전달하는 도구이자 현대미술의 대중성과 접근성을 강화하는 주요 수단으로 자리 잡았다.
연구자는 현대미술 속 캐릭터와 웹툰적 요소의 상관성을 분석하고, 이를 통해 대중문화적 서사와 예술적 표현이 어떻게 조화를 이루는지 탐구한다. 또한 본 연구를 통해 현대미술를 기반으로 한 웹툰 콘텐츠가 대중문화와의 상호작용 속에서 어떻게 새로운 산업으로 발전될 수 있는지에 대해 제안하고 분석해보고자 한다.
현대미술을 반영한 웹툰 캐릭터 콘텐츠는 매우 창의적이고 독특한 방식으로 시각적 언어를 활용할 수 있다. 동시대 현대미술의 다양한 장르에서 보여지는 캐릭터와 스토리텔링에 통합하면, 웹툰의 감각적 깊이를 더하고 독자들에게 신선한 경험을 제공할 수 있으며 더 나아가 현대미술의 정체성을 활성화하여 웹툰 캐릭터 콘텐츠 산업의 육성을 가져올 것이다.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, humanity's way of life has undergone rapid changes. As the acceleration of transformation spread across society, advanced information technology (IT) and artificial intelligence (AI) diversified media and digital platforms, ushering in an era of significant upheaval. With shifts in lifestyle overturning norms, various domains such as economy, science, education, environment, welfare, culture, and the arts began to waver. Amid these turbulent circumstances, we have constructed new areas of activity.
People have adapted to the new normal era in their unique ways, including flexible online and offline education formats, differentiated experiences and consumption, and multi-media expressions through diverse perspectives and convergent artistic practices. In this era, which represents both a crisis and an opportunity, societal networks have become more easily established, and the fulfillment of individual values and desires has taken on greater importance.
To satisfy these yearnings, individuals strive to understand their interests and achieve a sense of fulfillment and desire through self-development. They seek broader perspectives by delving into various fields, aiming for greater stability and satisfaction. Recently, the growing interest in art has led to diverse consumer activities, ultimately fulfilling cultural satisfaction and accelerating the phenomenon of digital expansion. According to one survey, the diversification, universalization, and normalization of digitalization have become evident. The fusion of popular culture and the arts has spurred the utilization of music, movies, videos, games, webtoons, web novels, audiobooks, and e-books, highlighting the increasing importance of culture in everyday life. This evolution reflects positive outcomes, as it signifies an advancement in cultural tastes and levels of enjoyment.
Improved accessibility to art and cultural content has allowed people to experience more cultural satisfaction, demonstrating how art adapts, evolves, and creates new values in response to technological advancements, societal changes, and shifts in the environment. As digital services and platforms have become more widespread, digital content consumption and the use of digital communication tools have intensified. This has narrowed the gap between the public and art, fostering continual growth through interaction.
As mass media has become a central genre of artistic expression, art has transcended mere adaptation to change. It has taken on a leading role in shaping the times, creating new values, and prompting profound reflection on humanity and society. The use of characters in contemporary art has established itself as a tool for conveying emotions and as a primary means of enhancing the popularity and accessibility of contemporary art.
This study analyzes the correlation between characters in contemporary art and elements of webtoons, exploring how popular cultural narratives and artistic expressions harmonize. Additionally, the research investigates how webtoon content, based on contemporary art, can interact with popular culture to develop into a new industry.
Webtoon character content that reflects contemporary art can employ visual language in highly creative and unique ways. By integrating characters and storytelling from various genres of contemporary art, webtoons can deepen their sensory appeal, provide readers with fresh experiences, and further activate the identity of contemporary art. This could foster the growth of the webtoon character content industry.
