Hagok(霞谷) Chung Chedu(鄭齊斗) kept his faith with the Wang Yangming Studies(陽明學) in the period when it was treated as a infidel. Since he lived a age of confucian rituals, his studies of rites reflects his recognition of reality as a the Wang Yangming-scholar, Chung Chedu first began arranging his family's own way of funeral rites and sacrificial rites to enforce the clan rule system. In his will of imsul(壬戌遺敎), he emphasized practical way of rituals which keep to a rule of simplicity. Especially he focused his eyes on the practicality of Chu His`s Family Rituals, and criticized Sangnyepiyo(喪禮備要) which just added some ancient rituals(古禮) to it. He respected studies of rites of Ugye(牛溪) Sung Hon(成渾) according to the Young Doctrine(少論) tradition, and criticized wrong customs of age thoroughly. He also criticized the wrong proxy custom of an ancestral rite(攝主) by an inappropriate relatives, and emphasized the absolute primogeniture of the clan. He corresponded with relatives very often and tried to establish a strict order in his lineage. Chung Chedu participated in dealing with the problem of royal rituals(典禮 問題) as the Sanrim(山林) and a senior minister. He established the national law which is proper with the reward of dress code in mourning(報服) in the debate of dress code in mourning for Daneubin(端懿嬪), and through this he accomplished a practical purpose of removing the clue of the ritual dispute (禮訟). He emphasized an authority of king through the debate of dress code in mourning for Kyungjong(景宗) and prince Hyungjang(孝章世子) in Youngjo (英祖) reign. He put the lineage-legitimacy(宗統) first over the family order(倫 序) in royal dress code in mourning. He assumed the relation between Kyungjong and Youngjo as a father and son, so he made a decision how queen of Kyungjong and queen of sukjong(肅宗) dressed during funeral. This is very different from the theory of rites of the Old Doctrine(老論) which emphasized that royal familes and literatus must wear a funeral garments according to the heaven-made(天作). Chung Chedu also criticized the dress code in mourning for sukjong which has its root in the Five Ritural Codes of Dynasty(國朝五禮儀) and led by the Old Doctrine. He emphasized that the dress code in mourning for a royal family should be based on ancient rituals and the Five Ritural Codes of Dynasty, and the common man should not change it accordingly. The studies of rites of Chung Chedu is closely related to royal authority enforcement. He claimed The tang-pyeong policy(蕩平策) which subordinates the power of vassal(臣權) to the power of king(王權). The tang-pyeong policy is a unitary political operating system based on unitary system of philosophy. It also fall in with his philosophy that only with the tang-pyeong policy based on royal authority, abuses of the struggle between a factions could be avoided.
