Robbie McCauley pointed out that slavery and rape are fundamental traumas that occur in an African-American woman`s life. Sally`s Rape reconstructs ``unspeakable`` events such as rape and an auction which were done to the African-American woman slave in slavery. Great-great Grandma Sally`s painful experiences are manifested in Robbie`s dream. Sexual violence committed toward a black slave by a white master is an unforgettable cultural memory and a historical pain which are inscribed in her body. Interracial rape is an ideological site producing differences by sex, race, and class. Dialogue between two characters (Robbie and Jeannie) and with the audience is a principal tool for communion. While the two women explore differences between their races, their roles are often reversed. This work is about Sally`s understanding rather than Sally`s rape itself. McCauley suggests the possibility that an African-American slave woman like Sally had strived to survive and love her life in her own way, though she experienced unbearable pain in her inevitable fate.
