The optimization algorithm of steel frame with fuzzy sets theory is presented in this study.
Two types of portal frame(1story-1bay and 1story-2bay) were taken as the structural models for analyzing the convergence to optimum solutions, studying the applicability and efficiency of this algorithm.
In this study, the total weight was used for the objective function, and the cross sectional area of members are adopted as the design variables.
The results of numerically tested for two types of portal frame can be summarized as follows :
a. As the membership function considered uncertainty of loads is increased objective function is decreased gradually
b. Tendency of optimization of steel frame structure is converged to the optimum solution stably and little bit fast within the second iterations.
Finally this study is more practical design, because it is considered the uncertainty of the loads. This design method is possible to present the sufficient data to the stage of preliminary design because user can choose optimum solution suitable to practical situation as it is presented by α-cut aproach.
