Cysticereosis of the central nervous system has recently drawn attention in Korea because of its gradually increasing incidence. 16 cases of surgically proven cysticereosis of the central nervous system managed at Department of Neurosurgery, College of Medicine, Seoul National University during the last 21 years were analyzed, and the following results were obtained.
1) Of 16 cases of cysticereosis of the central nervous system, 4 were parenchymatous type, 5 intraventricular (1 in the 3rd ventricle, and 4 in ventriculo-parenchyme), 4 leptomeningeal, 2 mixed, and 1 spinal.
2) Conray ventriculography was highly valuable in the diagnosis of the intraventricular cysticercosis when there was a round intraventricular filling defect, the shape of which varied with changing of the head position.
3) CT findings of the 4th ventricular cysticercosis were dilated lateral and 3rd ventricles and round dilatation of the 4th ventricle. Parenchymatous cysticercosis appeared as multiple, small and large, round low-density areas with slightly enhanced margin.
4) After surgery, 11 cases showed clinical improvements, 2 cases were stationary, and 3 cases died.
