1970년대 서남동 목사의 사회상 인식과 민주화 운동 = Pastor Seo Nam-dong’s Social Recognition and Democratization Movement in the 1970s

국문 초록 (Abstract)

서남동(1918∼1984)은 대한민국 민중신학의 개척자이자 민주화 운동가이다. 그의 신학과 관련해서는 많은 연구가 있지만, 민주화 운동과 관련된 논문은 없는 실정이다. 이 글에서는 1970년대 한국 민주화 운동 시기를 중심으로 서남동의 민주화운동가로서의 면모를 재조명하였다.
첫째, 그의 성장 과정에서 나타난 특징을 고향인 섬 자은도에서의 경험과 목포시절 양동교회에서의 인연을 중심으로 살폈다. 둘째, 신학자인 서남동이 사회참여에 적극성을 보이게 된 계기와 유신 시대에 그의 인식에 대한 내용을 구체적인 자료를 통해 분석하였다. 셋째, 서남동의 민주화운동 참여 활동을 세부적으로 분석했다. 그의 민주화운동은 1970년대 초부터 끊임없이 지속되었다. ‘한국 그리스도인의 신학적 선언’, ‘민주회복 국민선언’, ‘교수 자율권 선언’, ‘3·1민주구국선언’, ‘나라의 민주화를 위한 5개 단체 성명’, ‘지식인 134인 선언’ 등의 활동이 그 중심에 있었다. 그는 두 차례에 걸쳐 총 3년 2개월 동안 수감생활을 겪었지만 민주화 운동에 대한 초심이 변하지 않는 모습을 보여주었다. 민주화 운동가로서 서남동에 대한 평가를 연세대 학생들의 복권 운동과 사망 후 추모사 내용 등을 통해서 확인할 수 있었다.
이 글은 민중신학자인 서남동의 성장배경과 시대 인식을 새롭게 주목하고, 그의 민주화 운동가 활동 내력을 구체적인 자료를 토대로 분석했다는 면에서 의미가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Seo Nam-dong (1918∼1984) is a pioneer of popular theology of Korea as well as a democratization activist. With respect to his theology, there are many studies but there is no thesis regarding his democratization movement. In this article, with the focus on the period of 1970s for the democratization movement of Korea, the appearance of Seo Nam-dong as a democratization activist is demonstrated once again.
First, the characteristics displayed in his growth process has been sought with the focus on his experience in his home island, Jieun-do, and his ties in Yangdong Church in Mokpo. Second, the turning point for Seo Nam-dong who was a theologian to enthusiastically involved in the social participation and his perspectives in the Yusin era are analyzed through detailed data. And third, the democratization movement activities of Seo Nam-dong are analyzed in details. His democratization movement continued unequivocally from the early 1970s. At the heart of it all, there were activities of ‘Theological Declaration of Korean Christians’, ‘People’s Declaration of Democratic Restoration’, ‘Declaration of Professors for Self-regulation Right’, ‘March 1 Democratic Patriotism’, ‘Statement of 5 Organizations for the National democratization’, ‘Declaration of 134 Intellectuals’ and so on.
On two occasions, he was imprisoned for a total of 3 years and 2 months, but his longing toward the democratization movement had not compromised. As a democratization activist, the evaluation of Seo Nam-dong could be affirmed through the reinstatement movement of Yonsei University students, contents of memorial speech given for his memoirs after his death and so forth.
This article has its implications in the aspect of newly paying attention to the background of growth for a popular theologian, Seo Nam-dong, and his perspective on time, and reviewed comprehensively on his history of activities as a democratization activist.
