This research focuses on works developed under the‘72 Hour Project’carried out by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Among 73 works, 37 works implemented from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed and classified, and subsequently, 29 representative works appropriate for the Landscape Image Preference Survey were selected. Methods of field study, literature survey and questionnaire survey were used, and the collected questionnaires were interpreted through statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis of image satisfaction level before and after the launch of‘72 Hour Project’. In addition, factor analysis, clustering analysis, and ANOVA were conducted in order to examine Landscape Image Preference after the creation of‘72 Hour Project’.
Through the analysis of the satisfaction survey before and after the implementation of the work, it was concluded that the factors that affect the satisfaction of the landscape image were improved facilities, improved pavement and harmony with the surrounding landscape, and that the higher the degree of improvement of the work's facilities, the higher the overall satisfaction of the space.
In order to examine the image preference on the basis of landscape adjectives, two types of analysis were conducted. As a result, two factors - harmony and aesthetics - were derived from the factor analysis, and common characteristics between specific works within each cluster were found through the cluster analysis. Analysis of the overall satisfaction level of four clusters derived from the cluster analysis showed that the average of the overall satisfaction level was also the highest for the cluster with high level of harmony and aesthetics while the cluster with low level of harmony and aesthetics indicated the lowest level of overall satisfaction, which led to the conclusion that the harmony and aesthetics of the work affected the satisfaction level in its evaluation.
After categorizing the works based on cluster analysis statistics, the analysis of each work was performed to discover that in the case of the cluster type C, which showed high level in both harmony and aesthetics, most of the works were highly harmonized with floor pavement, design of the facilities and planting around them, and their design itself was of a high quality. In the case of type B with high aesthetics level only, the main structures of the works were made of modern frames, while in the case of type D with high level of harmony, most of the works were intended for rest areas, where the use of work space and surrounding area was harmonious and convenient. In the case of type A, which showed low level in both harmony and aesthetics, various patterns of vegetation, facilities, and pavement were found and the colors and materials used in facilities were relatively diverse. In conclusion, the harmony of an work was relevant to its usability in relation with surrounding space, and aesthetics could be interpreted in association with the quality of the design of the work.
For the‘72 hour Project’to have a positive effect on the improvement of the city's scenic beauty over the long term in sustainable way, it is considered that the project should be improved in terms of aesthetic aspects to enhance the visual preferences of the works to be created in the future. Therefore, it is convinced that landscape management should be carried out in a way that improves the harmony and aesthetics of works that will be created within the framework of the‘72 hour Project’.
By limiting the range of the study to only the images of the works created under the‘72 hour Project’, this research may not provide the satisfaction perceived by actual pedestrians and the opinion of various parties who participated in the‘72 hour Project’. However, it has its significance to review the changed spaces through the‘72 hour Project’, to examine the evaluation and opinion of the image of related works, and to analyze how the image characteristics of the works within the‘72 hour Project’affect the urban landscape image preference.
