John Steinbeck’s early years’ life conditions, such as his mother’s coercion, atheism, and his experiences as a laboring worker in the Roaring Twenties, brought about The Pastures of Heaven. It shows the rebellious satire to the traditional values including religion, economy and morality. Given that it has not been researched much, this paper observes the style of panorama and irony of this novel, and the neurotic and psychotic characters, insisting that not only the Munroes but also the other characters are responsible for their tragedies contrary to the past researches, and demonstrates this view of American realism based on textual evidences. And this paper introduces the ethical concept of “Arete” from Greek materials, and suggests it as a way of interpretation of understanding the grotesque locals and a good strategy to avoid the kind of negative results. Lastly to say, this paper would be meaningful in extending the academic scope of Steinbeck’s literary works at least by being a little catalyst to rediscover his apprenticeship values substantially.
