This study compared the correctional system for juvenile delinquents in the United States of America with that in Korea, That is, this study discussed the legal definition of juvenile delinquency and the basic policy of its prevention and rehabilitation, and the elements-the police, juvenile court, training school, and aftercare system-of the juvenile justice system in both countries.
According to the findings of comparing these factors in both countries, the basic policies of juvenile delinquency are similar to each other, and the remarkable differences of the correctional system of both countries are as follows;
1. The unification and specialization of the correctional system for juvenile delinquents.
2. The diversity of institutions, agencies, and its programs.
3. The practical use of specialists, social workers, psychologists, and so on.
Accordingly, in spite of the similarity of the basic policies of juvenile delinquency, it is due to the differences of the essential cognition of juvenile delinquency that there are the above-mentioned differences in the correctional system of both countries. That is, it results in the lack of understanding of juvenile delinquency.
In conclusion, in Korea, for the purpose of establishing the more appropriate and developmental correctional system for juvenile delinquents, it is essential for the whole nation to be, continuously, concerned about juvenile delinquency and to have a right cognition and understanding of it.
