Abstract
China is currently in a crucial stage of rural revitalization in the new era. In this policy context, the key issue becomes how to achieve comprehensive and multi-faceted rural revitalization. In particular, how to better leverage the potential and wisdom of rural residents, guide them to actively participate in the process of rural revitalization, has been recognized as a key issue. However, the specific role and value of rural residents participating in rural revitalization strategies are currently lacking in-depth understanding and research in academia.
Against this backdrop, the concepts and methods of co-creation design have been introduced into the process of rural revitalization. Co-creation design emphasizes the active participation of all stakeholders, including users, in the design and decision-making process, aiming to improve the quality and acceptance of design. However, in the specific practices of rural revitalization, the concepts and methods of co-creation design have not been fully applied and developed. Many issues and challenges remain unclear, such as how rural residents participate in the co-creation design process and how this participation impacts rural revitalization strategies.
Firstly, from a theoretical perspective, in-depth research into the process of rural residents participating in the co-creation design of rural revitalization can provide new perspectives and understandings to interpret and explain the behavior patterns, motivations, and attitudes of rural residents. This not only contributes to the enrichment and expansion of co-creation design theory but also aids in further understanding and analyzing the role and value of rural residents in rural revitalization strategies.
Secondly, from a practical perspective, understanding and exploring the specific role and influence of rural residents in the co-creation design process can provide practitioners with actionable guidelines and references, contributing to the effectiveness and acceptance of rural revitalization strategies. Simultaneously, it can provide policy-makers with decision support to better formulate and implement rural revitalization strategies.
The main purpose of this study is to understand and elaborate on the role and value of rural residents participating in co-creation design in rural revitalization strategies, providing theoretical support and actionable guidance for practitioners. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions: (1) What roles do rural residents play in the co-creation design process? (2) How does this participation affect rural revitalization strategies? (3) How to promote the participation of rural residents more effectively to enhance the effect of rural revitalization strategies?
This study firstly conducts an in-depth theoretical analysis of related literature to reveal the theoretical foundation and practical application of co-creation design in rural revitalization strategies. Then, through multiple case studies, we examine the practical process and results of residents participating in co-creation design. These cases are from different countries and regions, with diverse socio-economic conditions for revitalization, covering various types of resident participation in community co-creation revitalization projects, such as community building, rural tourism, urban renewal, etc. Through deep analysis and comparison of these cases, we propose a theoretical model of resident participation in co-creation design and validate it with empirical data. This study uses mixed research methods. The theoretical part is mainly based on a literature review, constructing a theoretical framework of rural residents participating in co-creation design by reading and analyzing related theories and studies. The empirical part is mainly based on case studies. We selected representative rural revitalization projects and conducted detailed descriptions and analyses of these projects through in-depth field investigations, interviews, and data collection.
Through in-depth literature research and case analysis, this study found that rural residents play a crucial role in the co-creation design process. Their participation not only contributes to generating design solutions that better suit local conditions but also enhances their sense of identification and participation in revitalization projects. However, the degree and mode of participation of rural residents show significant differences in different cases, which are mainly affected by various factors such as their capabilities, knowledge, attitudes, and the strategies of project organizers.
By comparing the results of different cases, this study found that effectively organizing and guiding rural residents to participate in co-creation design has a decisive impact on the successful implementation of rural revitalization strategies. Specifically, those adopting open, inclusive, supportive strategies, focusing on cultivating the design capabilities and innovative spirit of rural residents, can effectively stimulate their enthusiasm and creativity, thus achieving the goals of rural revitalization better.
Based on these findings, this study draws the following main conclusions:
First, rural residents play a key role in the co-creation design process of rural revitalization strategies, and their participation has a decisive impact on generating design solutions with local characteristics and acceptance, as well as achieving the goals of rural revitalization.
Second, to effectively promote the participation of rural residents, an inclusive, supportive strategy should be adopted, focusing on the cultivation of design capabilities and innovative spirit of rural residents.
Finally, the findings of this study not only provide new perspectives for theoretical research but also offer actionable guidance for practitioners. Particularly for the designers and executors of rural revitalization strategies, this study provides an effective method: by co-creation design, stimulating and utilizing the knowledge, skills, and innovative spirit of rural residents to promote the realization of rural revitalization.
