This study tried to reveal structural relationship between objectified body consciousness and psychological maladjustment related with effects of dancers’ perfectionistic self-presentation on their performance execution satisfaction. To realize this study’s purpose, 360 professional dancers of eight national, public, and private professional dance companies in Seoul were sampled. Except 52 who had not answered clearly in the survey or omitted some questionnaires, 308 people’s data were used in a real analysis. After the analysis result, next conclusions are extracted.
First, from difference verification’s result of the perfectionistic self-presentation according to the dancers’ background characteristic, gender had significant difference statistically in NDP(Non-display of Imperfection) among low factors of perfectionistic self-presentation. Academic background and practice time among dance experience features showed significant difference statistically in NDC(Non-disclosure of Imperfection).
Second, from difference verification’s result of the objectified body consciousness according to the background characteristic of dancers, gender had significant difference in body surveillance and body shame among the low factors of the objectified body consciousness.
Also, age, academic background, married or not had a significant difference in the body surveillance statistically.
Third, from difference verification’s result of anxiety and body dissatisfaction among psychological maladjustments according to the background characteristic of dancers, the anxiety and the body dissatisfaction did not show difference in gender, age, educational background, married or not, major in dance experience characteristic, position, and practice time all.
Forth, from difference verification’s result of the performance satisfaction according to the dancers’ background, gender, age, academic background of dancers had no difference. But, married or not had a significant difference in role performance satisfaction of the performance satisfaction. Married dancers showed higher than unmarried dancers in the role performance satisfaction. Dancers’position(regular members, associate members, trainees, and so on) had a significant difference statistically in the role performance satisfaction. Others (main dancers, directors, trainers, and so on) were highest in the role performance satisfaction. Regular, associate members and trainees were in order.
Fifth, a result of causality of model perfectionistic self-presentation, objectified body consciousness, psychological maladjustment, and performance satisfaction was adequate partially. Namely, the perfectionistic self-presentation had statistically a significantly inappropriate effect in the course of objectified body consciousness. And, the perfectionistic self-presentation had a significantly static effect in the course of the psychological maladjustment. However, the perfectionistic self-presentation did not have a significant effect in the course of body dissatisfaction. Also, task performance satisfaction had a significantly inappropriate influence in the course of perfectionistic self-presentation and performance satisfaction. Also, courses of objectified body consciousness and performance satisfaction had a significantly inappropriate effect on the task performance satisfaction and the role performance satisfaction all. In the course of psychological maladjustment’s anxiety and performance satisfaction, the task performance satisfaction and the role performance satisfaction did not have a significant influence all. The task performance satisfaction and the role performance satisfaction had a significantly inappropriate influence in the course of the body dissatisfaction and performance satisfaction.
Therefore, according to the confirmed courses in the structural relations of perfectionistic self-presentation, objectified body consciousness, psychological maladjustment (anxiety, body dissatisfaction), and performance satisfaction of dancers, this study’s hypothesis is partially supported. Also, the performance satisfaction’s course structure was confirmed to be different from the task performance satisfaction and the role performance satisfaction according to statistic verification. To professional dancers, satisfaction for performances and success or not can be under the control of various positive and negative factors. Diverse factors related with the performance satisfaction can influence not only personal psychological factors but also environment and interpersonal aspect. Especially, mistakes or attitudes of fellow dancers can affect as important prediction variables according to roles of guides, leaders, or performances.
In conclusion, through empirical analysis for dancers’ physical and psychological features of domestic professional dance groups and activities and teamwork within the groups, development such as self-improvement and personal own efforts and mind control to conduct perfect performances will be necessary.
